Humans and dolphins could soon be able to communicate freely with one another -- thanks Apple's iPad. Marine researchers in Mexico have started using the device with a 2-year-old bottlenose, who taps on the screen with his rostrum to identify objects he's seen in the real world.
Dolphin expert Jack Kassewitz says the introduction of the iPad into his research means they could be on the verge of a breakthrough in developing a complete language interface between humans and dolphins.
Because Merlin the dolphin is able to operate the gadget himself (once it's been placed in a waterproof bag), researchers hope he could soon use it to "say" if there is something he wants, or even describe his emotions.
"Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could establish another sentient being on this planet?" said Kassewitz.
We agree. However, Flipper wouldn't have been quite the same if little Sandy had received emails from his dolphin saying things like, "I'm bored. Bring fish."
