When it came to Asylum's attention that Omaha woman Kia Carroll's nude "cleaning" company was making waves with local residents, we had to investigate.Sadly for our dirty carpets (and minds), the woman who answered the phone at ODd'z and En'z Janitorial Service told us she wasn't accepting clients.
But there was more to the story. The address on the fliers that originally started the whole ruckus was Cherry Tree Apartments, an Omaha Housing Authority–owned property.
So we decided to placed a call to the Omaha Housing Authority to determine if the Od'z and En'z year-old business had broken any federal laws.
Oops.
"This absolutely caught us out of the blue," said George Achola, OHA's legal director. "If she or any resident does not report income, they are in danger of violating federal laws. We were totally unaware of this situation but we have opened an ongoing investigation."
Achola originally told the media that his office was going to wait to determine if Carroll's operation had broken any criminal laws related to prostitution, but after our call his office is moving forward.
Carroll said she has been cleaning houses for two years but decided to take her business to a new level. Currently she has two employees, a man and a woman, and she is offering her services for bachelor parties and private shows. Carroll has told the media that she's not a prostitute, just a single mom and small-business owner.
Federal and Nebraska laws state that residents receiving governmental rent assistance have to report all income and income changes. According to Achola, the OHA could be held liable as operator of the property if Carroll did not have the proper license, permits and liability insurance. (Achola would not address if Carroll had obtained any licenses or insurance.)
The city of Omaha does not require licenses for cleaning services but adult-oriented establishments have to met zoning and permit requirements.
A call to the Nebraska secretary of state revealed no listing for a business under Carroll's name or under "Od'z and En'z" Janitorial Service.
Asylum would like to formally apologize for this misuse of journalism.
