Our memory is a bit shaky -- as are our hands (damn you, DTs!) -- but we're pretty sure we attended Philly Beer Week this past weekend. When you drink 36 beers in 36 hours -- as we did with a fellow degenerate from Maxim -- you tend to forget certain things. Like entire weekends. But one memory is as crystal clear as our urine was: The city of Philadelphia produces many, many tasty beers.
Philly Beer Week, which runs through this Sunday, provides an annual opportunity for beer lovers to drink with the fine men and women who produce their favorite brews. More than 200 breweries are on hand this year, and at least 30 of these hail from within spitting distance of the Philadelphia area. In all, more than 1,000 different beers are available for consumption at 100-plus events.
We can't figure out the math there, but we do know that's approximately a sh**-ton of beer. If you're able to hit Philadelphia this week, we highly recommend checking the festival out.
While there's no way we could accurately recall each of the three dozen beers we consumed at Philly Beer Week, we do remember six of our favorites. Agree? Disagree? Feel free to give a shout-out to your own favorite Philadelphia-area beer in the comments section.
Monkey Knife Fight
Nodding Head Brewery
Like the many bobbleheads that grace this cozy, second-floor brewpub, your Sputnik-shaped noggin will be wobbling after a few of these mild, ginger-infused beers. As affable bartender Pete says, "Everybody loves a monkey -- unless one is biting your balls and face off." Luckily, there's little chance of that happening at Nodding Head ... we hope.
KenzingerPhiladelphia Brewing Company
A true session pilsner at only 4.5 percent ABV, Kenzinger, from the upstart Philadelphia Brewing Co., goes down so easy you might just find yourself unable to resist having six in a row. Based on personal experience the morning after, we highly recommend not following that up with six more.
Royal Bohemian PilsnerDock Street Brewing Company
Located in what was described to us as the "DMZ of Philly," Dock Street is actually a highly respectable place to pass an afternoon. We sat at the bar and watched intently as an extremely hot, tattooed bartender poured us roughly a gallon of this highly drinkable Czech-style lager.
Extra Special AleYards Brewing Company
This beer was fruity and scrumptious -- two of the wussiest words we've ever typed in relation to drinking. But nothing else about this bold ale is weak. In fact, it seems like a beer that might run onto the field at a Phillies game and get tased.
Oatmeal StoutTriumph Brewing Company
A creamy ale with zing, this potent oatmeal stout was about the last thing we needed after having already consumed eight beers in a single afternoon. But the popular Olde City brewhouse Triumph Brewery -- which sadly has no affiliation with the Insult Comic Dog -- was kind enough to let us put our head down on the bar and sleep it off.
Summer Love AleVictory Brewing Company
Produced just in time for Philly Beer Week 2010 by nearby Victory (whose Prima Pils is also a winner), this beautifully complex concoction was created in conjunction with the Greater Philadelphia Tourism's "With Love, Philadelphia XOXO" marketing initiative.
And really, as we learned all weekend, Philly beers are indeed about love, unless we're talking about that foul stuff brewed in the basement by that weird German dude in Conshohocken. The two days we spent drinking at the bars and festival events showed us not only that our livers are made of iron, but that there are few better places to test them out than in Philadelphia.
