If you want to avoid looking like a tourist, wearing socks with sandals was probably a bad choice. Beyond that, you can head out to Governor's Island if you feel the need to take some snapshots, because they just don't go there.Flickr user Eric Fischer has created a map showing the places where tourists take pictures in the city versus the places locals do (red dots = tourists, blue dots = locals, yellow dots = undetermined), assuming that people who have a number of photos tagging the same city over a long period of time are locals.
Using geotags, Fischer has brilliantly deduced that visitors don't take many pictures in Bushwick, that out-of-towners avoid the overwhelming fish-stench of Chinatown, and that the East Village is relatively tourist-free.
Also according to Fischer's map, the majority of Queens and the Bronx has never even heard of Flickr, so if you're looking for something never before seen on the Internet, there are entire boroughs just waiting to be photographed at the end of train lines all across the city.
