Nude Snorkeling Record Attempt Fail
Who can think of a better way to celebrate World Oceans Day than breaking a naked snorkeling record with a bunch of strangers? Seventy-seven ocean-hating Aussies, that's who. Apparently only 23 of the expected 100 participants showed up, resulting in a failed world record attempt for the most nude snorkelers in one place.
The mass nude snorkel was part of the international celebrations for the United Nations' World Oceans Day and aimed to raise awareness about the plight of the Australia's Great Barrier Reef. We won't hold a grudge though, especially since the organizers of the event forgot to register with Guinness in the first place. We're sure they were off somewhere watching the entire series of "Lost" while talking to dolphins on their iPad.

The Nude Snorkel Record Attempt was indeed completely unofficial and not acknowledged by Guinness. Base Magnetic Island held the event inconjunction with events held on Magentic Island to celebrate the UN sanctioned World Oceans Day 2010. Could you think of a better way for a backpackers hostel on the beach and their guests to support than by 'nuding up and snorkeling'?
We were stoked to attract just the 23 snorkellers (and 10 swimmers out there for 'moral support') but we're ecstatic and proud for the publicity the event garnered for Magnetic Island, Queensland and World Oceans Day. Perhaps Guinness will return my emails for next years event...
