The first question that usually comes into our heads when cruising the shots on Awkward Family Photos is "Who on Earth thought that was a good idea?" That was the first question we asked when we found ourselves on the phone with Laurel Sparks, who, along with her dad and three siblings, is the cover model for the "Awkward Family Photos book," by website creators Mike Bender and Doug Chernack.
She passed the buck, just like we'd have done if it'd been us who were immortalized on film decked out head-to-toe in denim with a shaved head and lying atop our entire family.
"It was a combination of the photographer and my stepmom who came up with it," Sparks told Asylum before a family reunion -- during which the attending members of the clan agreed once more to pile on Dad to recreate the 1997 shot that made them Internet-famous.
"My stepmom saw some images of the photographer's work that were of kids lying on top of their parents like that, and I guess she just thought that it would translate," Sparks said.
And, while the difference between a photo of a parent with a small child on top of him and one of four grown children dressed in matching denim all stacked on top of their father is obvious to objective viewers like us, it wasn't quite as clear to the Sparks family.
Keep reading for more info and the new shot.

"A friend of mine saw the photo at a dinner party and sent it in [to Awkward Family Photos]," Sparks, who teaches painting at the university level, explained. "And it became really popular. When the Rachael Ray show called to see if we could come on, I had to call up my family and explain why it was on the site. My stepmom didn't understand why it was awkward. She thought it was cute."
Sparks herself, of course, labored under no such delusion.
"My ex saw it once and grabbed a copy, which is how my friend found it," she laughed. "I knew exactly how weird it was. I don't spend a whole lot of time wearing denim outfits like that."
Even though Sparks herself has become so closely identified with Awkward Family Photos -- and understands firsthand how someone can end up participating in one -- that doesn't stop her from questioning the choices of her fellow awkward families.
"I loved the website before I ever ended up on it," she told Asylum, "And there are some photos that I can't really imagine how they ended up like that. I'm hoping that most people on the site know how ridiculous the pictures are."
Still, at this point, Sparks' family has come to accept -- and embrace -- its status as the most awkward of awkward families ever photographed. For the new shoot, Sparks explained, "The stack is shorter and modified due to an incarceration, hernia and the frailty of aging." (But at least they're all still wearing blue jeans.)

All is not lost and there are still families like that to this day but we are few and far between. I am doing my best to spread the message that this life is much better and raising Godly kids who are in turn having families like we have. We have 4 boys and a girl and wrestling around and dog piling on someone was an every day experience at our house. So was hugging and kissing, telling each other we loved them, were proud of them, even helping each other with problems. No, they don't always get along, fighting happens alot!!!!But push comes to shove, don't mess with one or you have messed with them all. My boys are grown now but still hug and kiss both of us. Some of them will still hold my hand when we walk and talk together. They cry over the loss of one of their sisters with us even though she was stillbornand so the never got to meet her. Then we were blessed with a girl (even though I knew nothing about what to do with one)and we all rejoiced and spoiled her rotten. We have pictures of all of us pied up on the bed on dad for Fathers Day. Gee, I guess in some of you all's sick perverted minds that must be "wierd and something you would never do". Well that was how my kids woke thier dad up that morning before they fixed him breakfast so if that sick, give me sick 24/7 for the rest of my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had a professional family picture taken 3 years ago with 9 people. I (the mother)was sprawled out on the bottom of the picture and felt uncomfortable after viewing it. Everyone else was standing up. Very awkward !!

Wow, for all you losers who are thinking it differently than a family posing for a cute picture, that is just wrong. You can't seem to see the family smiling and having a good time because your just thinking of a negative position. May the family be close and love each other? Geez. I wish my family could be close like that. You don't see me making fun of this picture. Good job idiots.

Being a professional photographer, this is one of the most fun poses to do with a family who has SMALL CHILDREN. This pose is only awkward because the subjects are too old for such a pose - it should be used with children 10 and under, with willing parents. The children find it a joy to try not to "topple over". And kudos to any family willing to try something fun and new to create a memorable piece of art starring themselves!

How frightening that there are people posting here who don't see what is awkward about this picture! I am from a very close family with 4 siblings and we would never make fools of ourselves by piling on top of each other to take a family photo. Calling it awkward is putting it mildly. I would call it gross.

There's nothing awkward about the photo but I do have to feel sorry for the dad on the bottom! Ouch, his back will feel that tomorrow haha. All joking aside though, I wish my family were close enough to be ok with doing something like that. There hasn't been a family portrait photo in.. twenty or thirty years. Everyone's individual and independant of everyone else in the family. Enjoy your family while you have them!
