What do you get when women, homemade mallets, beat-up bicycles and a ball collide? Bike polo, of course!

Closer to street hockey than pony polo, the game is played three-on-three until one team nets five goals. The hardcourt sport has been growing in popularity since its inception in the 1800s. There's been a serious spike in the past 10 years, with teams popping up all over the world. One might say it is the fastest-growing polo variety, with canoe, camel and yak polo lagging behind.

Last month, the New York City Bike Polo League hosted its annual Ladies Army Tournament. Dozens of ferocious females fought for the grit and glory of it all -- proving that polo is not just for clumsy princes. These women live, breathe and bleed bike polo. We thought it was time to introduce you to the toughest chicks on two wheels.

How did you fall in love with bike polo?

"I was living in Toronto for a few years and I was really into the biking community. My friend owned a bike shop and I was told to come out. The first time I tried it, I loved it. It's very challenging. The better I get the better I feel about playing it. The people are really genuine. It's a great international community. It's an underground, renegade sport- it's our sport."

It's the same community, same vibe. I have polo crushes on people from other clubs. You have your pick of the litter!"

What's been your worst injury from bike polo?

"Well, I've lost two thumbnails playing- they were hit by mallets. Now I wear gloves. I was also playing in Florida and I flipped over my bike and my chain link gashed into my knee. The wind caught my disk wheel and took my bike out from under me. I landed on my chain link."

What other sports are you in to?

"I play tennis from time to time, and I played field hockey in school."

How did you fall in love with bike polo?

"When I moved here from Ireland I went looking for it. I had an easy in because there was no league- we were all learning together. Now it's much harder to get in to. I think women don't want to play because it's intimidating. The players are so fast and it's just so male dominated."
