What do you get when you combine a sofa with the motor of an old wheelchair? If you answered "something totally awesome," you're pretty much right. However, a better response would be: a totally awesome motorized couch that is also banned from the premises of the college campus where it was created.
That's right. After two Brigham Young University students spent three months creating their automotive love seat, campus security nipped their hard work in the bud by placing a campus-wide ban on any type of couch transportation.
If you're shaking your head in disgust at whoever could forbid such a cool invention, know that you're not alone.
"We're basically the same thing as a motorized wheelchair," says Nick Homer, inventor of the motorized couch. "We fought it, saying that the two are the same, but motorized wheelchairs are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act."
"Everyone was just kinda going nuts," Homer tells Asylum. "We had a line of about 10 cars backed up on the street and the police were called because we were blocking traffic. The police showed up after a few minutes and basically congratulated us on being awesome."
And the hysteria only seemed to get more extreme, explains the BYU student.
"Wherever we went, people would stop what they were doing and take pictures, gawk and start rolling on the ground like they were on fire."
Fortunately, before the ban was put into place, Homer and his partner in crime, Stewart Clyde, were able to utilize their motorized couch around campus pretty often. They hit up many a BYU football game, showed up looking ultra-suave at campus events and took it for regular spins down the sidewalk between classes.
And though the couch has been declared illegal on the school's premises, we are happy to inform you that it continues to get its fair share of use. The two drive it around town, up to drive-thru windows and even sneaked it into the Provo, Utah, Fourth of July Parade.
So what's next on the list for these collegiate scholars with a flair for luxury travel?
"We want to take the couch off eventually and put on a gondola ... like from Venice," Homer tells us. "We'll row around Provo and whenever we stop we'll pull out an anchor. Also, we'd have a cooler leaking water inside of it so that there would be a stream of water following us everywhere in the streets."
We just shed an anticipatory tear of joy.

Oh, it's Brigham Young University -- they probably think the invention is the work of the devil.

The couch-about is awesome. Don't get your bed bugs all aflutter folks. This will make its debut on all the talk shows. Be sure there are many attorneys frothing at the jaws wanting to get this case. I want the first license plate for it. I will have it made to say "myplceryrs" ...

Great! This should come in handy for future employment. Why study in "collage", when you can waste your time (and prob the parents money) building a couch with wheels. We wonder why the Chinese and the Indians are going to run us over. Oh, I have an idea, we can keep the present administration in office and they will take care of us!

Please.... Big deal, they built a frame and bolted on a loveseat, WHOOPEE! It took them 3 months to do it! They already make barstools and coolers with wheels and motors so whats the big deal? AND, didn't you notice the seat is as wide as the sidewalk? So who has the right of way? That's why BYU banned it, duh!

I know just what you mean. I still love to have fun of course, but I think my "crazy college days" are well behind me lol. Some people still do act like kids, no matter how old they really are. I still feel young and look young, people always think I am still in my 20's, but I know I have matured so much since then. I do still have a lot of great memories from college and I'm still in touch with many of my old friends, and my husband and I went to the same school too! I have been running my own ebay business for many years too, been very happy and able to stay home and spend lots of time with my family :-)

Couch or Love Seat, Useful or not it all depends on how one is looking at things. As to the time it took them to build this thing...they probably had to work around school/study time, doing repairs on the old wheelchair motor etc.. Oh, they also had to figure out how to build the right frame to balance this couch/love seat on that motor also. Either way at least these kids were using their brains instead of getting themselves in to some kind of trouble like a lot of kids manage to do. I like their idea for what they plan to do next with this thing. I can't wait to see a video of the next reincarnation of this item. These kids are using their brains and being inventive. We need people like this in this world. This kind of ingenuity can lead to other more important things later on. Keep on going guys.

It is a cool idea, but on campus it poses a problem. It occupies the entire walkway/sidewalk. Look at the width of it. I agree with the school here.
Anything that impedes the normal use of walkways by others should not be allowed to be used on them. Since the contraption is obviously not street legal, there is no other option.
Now, what they need to do is mount a recliner on that baby.

Hardly new, hardly an invention and definitely not an American idea. We have been motorizing all sorts of things here in Blighty. Our motorized couch came with a coffee table, lamps for indicators and a clock as a speedo. Bar stools, toilets, sheds and baths have all been motorized and no doubt on both sides of the pond.
