Sometimes it pays to be the forgetful husband. Sometimes it pays $1 million. Robert Stewart Jr. was walking out of a convenience store in Storm Lake, Iowa, when he realized he had forgotten to buy his wife an energy drink. But, unlike most of us, he somehow mustered the personal strength to go back in and buy it, rather than making an excuse when he got home.
It was a good decision, because he also decided on his second trip through the One Stop Shop to buy the last $20 "Lifetime Riches" scratch-off ticket. And he won.
Rather than take the $1 million annuity that would have paid him $40,000 a year for the next 25 years, Robert settled for a lump sum payment, which after taxes amounts to about $455,000.
He plans to replace his 1996 Oldsmobile with a new car and never again doubt the power of ginseng, B complex and 500 percent of the recommended daily allowance of caffeine.
