Nobody can ever say the Sauna World Championships in Finland wasn't intense. Not after one of the two finalists died, and the other was hospitalized for serious burns during what will most likely be the last installment of the annual event.
The goal of the competition is to be the last person remaining in a sauna that can reach up to 230 degrees Fahrenheit. Russia's Vladimir Ladyzhenski, who died before paramedics could get him to the hospital, actually had to be removed from the sauna by force when the judges sensed something had gone wrong. Finland's Timo Kaukonen, a five-time winner of the event, is at the hospital, in stable condition.
Police are investigating whether negligence on the part of the organizers lead to the tragic finale.
