There is no evidence that older women and younger men are hooking up more, as has been suggested in popular culture.Researchers at the University of Wales analyzed information on dating preferences, using online dating sites from 14 different countries. The results, which were published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, suggest that women almost exclusively seek men who are either older or their same age, whereas men almost exclusively seek women who are either younger or their same age. Which means? The traditional patterns of age and sex in dating have held.
"This notion of the 'toyboy' phenomenon is dispelled as a myth, which only exists in the world of celebrity, rather than reflecting real life," the study concluded.
Wait, so celebrities aren't the same as the rest of us?

I disagree. I wonder what the study would reveal if based on divorced women in their thirties. I know 5 who are dating men 8-11 yrs their junior, for reasons that stem from their particular experiences marrying young and emerging in their thirties with a different set of criteria than other "older" women who have never been married.

I agree, I am in my 30s and just out of a relationship of 6 years, with a man 8 years younger than me.... and most of my 30 something freinds are happy with their younger men too!!!

Cougardom may be more prevalent among celebrities, but it is alive and well out in the real world too. Studies show that younger man-older woman marriages have doubled in the last few decades. And studies based on online dating sites aren't always representative - studies (yes, more studies...) have shown that what people say they want online is not the same as what they'll date under different circumstances. Overall, while older woman-younger-man relationships may never become the norm, they're not a myth.
