The average one-way commute from home to work is 23 minutes.Gallup-Healthways came to that number by surveying more than 170,000 employed adults between 2009 and 2010. Not surprisingly, commute times were higher in more urban areas. Overall, 19 percent of American workers spend more than an hour commuting in total. And an unlucky 3 percent spend in excess of two hours.
The survey also found a direct correlation between how long a commute a person has and the likelihood a person will suffer a variety of mental and physical alignments. A person with a long commute is also more likely to be classified as "obese."
Score one for the bloggers: We might spend our days in Cheetos-stained pajamas, but most of our commutes are barely longer than 30 seconds.

My commute consists of 1 stop sign and 1 stop light, about 3 mile drive so I get to the office after getting my drive thru coffee in about 6 minutes. I couldnt imagine the people that drive thier steel coffins on freeways for hours on end, to and from, just aint worth it to deal with living like rats in a maze.

One mile commute in a community of less than five thousand - can hike it in about twenty minutes or less than a five minute drive.

I live 7 miles from work, and I leave at 6:30 a.m. -- virtually no traffic. Leave work at 3:00 p.m. and beat the rush. Life is good.

David, sounds like you are a USPS letter carrier.... because those times match my commute....and I'm a substitute carrier. 3.92 miles (one-way), 6 traffic lights, & low-volume traffic at 6:15AM. When weather is cool and dry, I try to ride my bicycle to work. Last week the water sprinkler got me! :(( LOL.

Unfortunately, you have to go where the jobs are. I commuted one hour each way for years in and around Baltimore. Moved to Columbus OH and it was down to 30 minutes. Four years ago I was blessed to get a wonderful job in a medium sized town an hour from Columbus. I got an apartment here and now drive 4 miles in 10 minutes (lots of lights and 25MPH zones) I love it!

I ride a commuter bus to work, 2 minutes to the bus pick up. I sleep or talk to friends on the way to work, so it is an extremely pleasant commute!
