Some think unicycles are pretentious, that a one-wheeled mode of transportation that should be reserved for circus freaks and jugglers looking to jump-start their acts. We're not of that mindset. Especially considering that the first-ever Unicycle Festival is coming to New York City this weekend.

While the squares are riding their two-wheelers through Central Park, not bothering to worry about little things like "balance" or "awkward backpedaling," the unis will be hosting a cyclist extravaganza on Governors Island.

Starting the festivities with a long ride down Manhattan on Friday, the games really begin with Saturday's main event. Unicycle Hockey, Unicycle Basketball (with demos by the King Charles Group, left), Unicycle Relays and just about any event you can think of ... on unicycles!

Festival organizer Keith Nelson, who recently attempted to cross 2,078 bridges on his unicycle (we honestly lost count after 50), was approached by Governors Island to bring his passion to life. "I am hoping for 42 to 50 riders across the Brooklyn Bridge, and I can easily imagine over 200 one-wheelers coming out to roll on Governors Island," Keith tells Asylum. "You will see some of the best riders of many styles featured on Governors Island."

We're hoping he's right. We skipped Burning Man for this.
