Wednesday, night Louis C.K.'s new stand-up movie, "Hilarious," had its premiere in New York. To evoke what will no doubt become many a film critic's go to one-liner summary, the movie fully "lived up to its name" -- and then some. The highlight of the show, however, came after the credits rolled and Louis himself took the stage. Here are some of his best quotes from the candid Q&A session during which Louis discussed the movie, his Mexican/Jewish heritage and his relationship with the Palin family. (Thanks to journalist Jessica Pilot for supplying some extra quotes for this post.)
On Drunk-Tweeting about Sarah Palin:
I was drinking rum and cokes. And I don't drink a lot. It's just something I don't do. So, when I drink, I tend to get there pretty quickly and I started Twittering mean things about Sarah Palin. I'm not a political person, it's just she's a beautiful villain ... I just love saying horrible things about her. I do hate her. I think she's Hitler, I really do, but I don't do it because she's Hitler -- it's just her being Hitler makes me feel unapologetic about it.
It's a long, long, long haul, and you just have to be onstage all the time and there's no shortcuts, except failing and failing and failing and learning from failure and not letting it get you down. And you're probably not going to make it. But you have to do it, despite that peril.
On introducing his daughter to material about her:
My older daughter, I was showing her one of my specials, an early special, where I was talking about playing hide-and-seek with her and how much I hated how badly she played. So, I showed her the hide-and-seek thing and I said, "This is me pretending to be mad at you for playing hide-and-seek badly." And she did find that funny. I'm not worried about her seeing this stuff about herself because you can love somebody and be frustrated with them at the same time, and this is an extreme version. It's not the kid next door, it's my kid, so she's got the DNA to understand it, I think.
Zach, often when I see him at a show, he says, "Don't you hate that you have to make them [the audience] laugh?" And that's just on the other side of the world for me. I don't live for the pleasure of other people, but I want the audience to get what I'm doing ... But Zach, he just opens his mouth and he's just f**kin' funny. But, if Zach had to do like three specials in three years, I don't know what they'd look like. I just think he wouldn't do it.
On race:
I grew up Mexican. My father's Mexican and I lived from when I was six months-old till I was about 8 years-old in Mexico City. Spanish was my first language, and I actually had the experience of coming to America as a Mexican immigrant. So racial identity to me is a fascinating thing because people say anti-Mexican shit in front of me all the time, because they have no f**king idea that I'm Mexican. In California my liberal showbiz friends just make Mexican jokes -- I mean disgusting Mexican jokes -- and they don't think they're being gross.
I'll own it. It's funny. F**k everybody. It's hilarious. I'm a professional comedian, so it's not weird for me to say that I'm very funny. It's not arrogant. People laugh, so there's a very measurable funniness.
"Hilarious" will debut on television on EPIX, Sept. 18. In 2011, the film will be released on Comedy Central and DVD. If you haven't already watched "Louie," which was recently renewed for a second season on FX, we strongly recommend that you blow off whatever it is that you were about to do and check it out on Hulu.
