New York City remains the safest of the 25 biggest cities in the United States.

According to an FBI report, which took into account the crime rate in the year 2009, New York beat out the West Coast safe havens of San Jose and San Diego to snag the safest-city honor. New York was also the safest big city in 2008. In '09, it padded its lead with an overall crime-rate reduction of 5.1 percent, which was greater than the drop in crime nationwide over the past year.
