Almost 6,000 motorist deaths in 2008 were caused by a driver using a cell phone in some capacity.According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System, auto deaths involving cell phones have increased 28 percent between 2005 and 2008. Since overall use of cell phones has been steady over that period, experts attribute this jump to more and more motorists texting while operating their vehicle.
In light of these statistics, more laws restricting texting while driving may be necessary.
Although the consequences are generally less dire, a ban on texting while walking could also be of benefit to pedestrians in some of our larger cities.

It's no joke--DWT is deadly. I was in slow stop-and-go traffic once, and thought it was okay to whip out my phone and tell my friend I was going to be late. Suddenly, BAMM, guardrail. My poor car...my poor neck. I was lucky nobody got seriously hurt. Don't make that mistake, people. That was stop and go traffic--imagine what could happen at regular speeds!

"Almost 6,000 motorist deaths in 2008 were caused by a driver using a cell phone in some capacity." - 6,000 fatalities? Can't they get this guy off the road? Or at least take his phone away from him? How many thousand people has he got to kill before they do something about him?
