Our happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies.

Almost 6,000 motorist deaths in 2008 were caused by a driver using a cell phone in some capacity.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System, auto deaths involving cell phones have increased 28 percent between 2005 and 2008. Since overall use of cell phones has been steady over that period, experts attribute this jump to more and more motorists texting while operating their vehicle.

In light of these statistics, more laws restricting texting while driving may be necessary.

Although the consequences are generally less dire, a ban on texting while walking could also be of benefit to pedestrians in some of our larger cities.
