In the aftermath of both the 2004 and 2008 presidential elections, residents of states that broke for the winning candidate were more likely to download pornography.Previous studies show that having a candidate they support win or lose an election affects the testosterone levels of men. Patrick and Charlotte Markey, a husband and wife team of researchers at Rutgers University and Villanova University, respectively, decided to test how this finding relates to the real world.
Because testosterone and sex drive are linked, the pair checked Google's report of searched terms in the week before and after the 2004 and 2008 election.
Lo and behold, in the week following the election, searches involving the 10 most popular words used in porn requests became more prevalent in states that voted for Obama in 2008 and Bush in 2004, but not in the states that went to the losing candidate. The Markeys' analysis of the 2006 midterm election also yielded similar results.
So, no matter what happens in the midterm election in five weeks, it looks like porn will come out a winner.
