Popular teenagers are more likely to turn to drugs and alcohol than their rebellious or troubled counterparts.Researchers at the University of Montreal's School of Psychoeducation tracked 500 students between the ages of 10 and 15, recording both their level of popularity and their consumption of drugs and alcohol. Over that time period, illicit substance use among popular kids accelerated at a faster rate than among the non-popular -- even if the non-popular kids had emotional problems.
Furthermore, popular kids who also had popular friends were more likely to turn to drugs and alcohol than popular kids whose friends weren't as popular.
"Teenagers don't consume to belong to the group or to increase their popularity level, they do it to remain well-liked," says Jean-Sebastien Fallu, who headed the study. "It's more about keeping their status than increasing it."
Thus concludes the study least likely ever to be referenced in a "Say No to Drugs" campaign.

Oh no it's completely true. I'm 17, I'm not popular (I have a few friends that are) but I don't really associate with the popular groups. When my non-popular friends and I have parties they're fun and alcohol/drug free, but when the popular kids have parties you ALWAYS here about how much alcohol they consumed and how much weed they smoked and how many people passed out and who threw up first. I mean I drink, but only when I go to Germany in the summer because it's legal.

This doens't make sense to me. There are only a few "Popular" people per school. So are there only a few kids doing alcohol and drugs? I don't think so

Are you crazy? It hasn't been that long since I was in high school and there are more than a few popular kids in any given school. My graduating class had about 300 students and about 40% would be considered 'popular' Most of them were doing way more than smoking the occasional joint too, at that time cocaine and ecstasy were their drugs of choice. Now most of them aren't so popular, funny how things end up. (this was in 96' by the way)

NOT at all. This artical is waaaay off. There are very few who do drugs to stay cool, i would say most are simply BORED. Yes, in a small town or if a teenager is lower class, most of the time they get bored often, so they turn to drugs as a cheaper way of having fun in the current conditions.

People stop saying it's boredom/lower class. I'm 17 and go to a high school in a very upper class area. There are stoners but they stick to weed and stay away from alcohol. The majority of popular kids at my school come from families with an income of at least 200K a year. Any time there's a party with the popular kids you always hear about who brought what alcohol, who threw up first etc. I'm not popular but a few of my friends are, so I've been to these parties, I don't drink (unless I'm in Germany where it's legal) but in order to go to the bathroom you need to wait about 20 minutes because everybody is doing shots in the bathroom (if parents are present) otherwise they just drink in the party area someone Always pukes and the police have showed up a few times (which is why I don't drink, don't feel like doing community service). When the 'popular' kids just hang out they almost always pass a joint around. If you don't think that this is true then you are obviously not in high school anymore.

I hate to break this to you, but the rich bored kids could afford it better. They do it because they think it's cool and other kids hang around these popular kids and drink and do drugs just get noticed themselves. It's the concept of fitting in which is really wrong in this case. There are followers and there are leaders and it's about time these kids started deciding which they are going to be. The popular kids do have alcohol and pot parties.

Really, did someone spend money on this? Of course "being popular" has A LOT to do with teens using, however, it doesn't matter who you are, what class or group you are in... if teens don't have positive parenting at home, they WILL turn to whatever it takes to get some kind of attention, be it school friends, boy/girl friends and so on...raise your children properly, listen to them, pay attention to them, and lastly, if the parents use (be the kid popular or not) the kid will likely be an abuser also (so all u 80's parents who still get high, your kids know it!)

I disagree, with the popularity theory, Its Boredom that cause kids to do drugs

bobby lack of family relations is a big reason why kids do drugs. Kids that are first born are at greater risk of going on drugs.

i agree. These kids don't have enough responsibilities. Idleness and boredom is the culprit.

How much money did this study cost? Whatever it was it was a waste of money. People take alcohol and drugs to get buzzed. Everyone gets stressed out and taking drugs or drinking is the ticket to awesomeville. It's not that hard to understand.
Drugs and alcohol will never go away. They are apart of our culture and have been for thousands of years. We all do drugs, it's just a matter of personal taste and choice.

Hi Kada, As far as your comment about " Everyone does drugs"please do not throw everyone into the same pot as yourself. If you do drugs, that is your business as an adult,I do not do drugs for recreational purposes. I do not even like taken asprin. Life is hard enough without being in a state of zombie.Thank you.

You don't smoke or drink caffeine? You don't do anything at all that alters your consciousness? I think you are ignorant of the fact that ALL Americans are drugged up on something legal or not.

1. Tell your kids from the time they are born that you love them---tell them OFTEN.
2. Never push your kids away when they need you. Nothing is more important than sitting down and talking to them when they have problems. Make it very clear that they can always come to you and that you will never make them feel like their problems are insignificant.
3. Hug them every chance you get.
4. Make sure you impart to them what your values are---what you do and don't approve of as far as their behavior is concerned.

I feel that the number one reason that kids take drugs is that the goverment lets drugs into the contry. If there is no drugs, there will be no kids on drugs.Simple huh.
