Halloween has had a long complicated history, involving multiple continents and stints as both a secular and religious holiday.

Its present incarnation, as a heavily commercialized celebration of candy and costumes -- much more treat than trick -- was initially conceived as a holiday for the elementary school set. However, over the last couple decades, more folks of all ages have been wholeheartedly embracing the October 31 fun.

In fact, some cities have been forced to intact ordinances against teenage trick or treaters, and Halloween parties are now all the rage for young, and even middle-aged, adults.
