About one in five Americans has seen or been in the presence of a ghost. In December of 2009, The Pew Research Center surveyed 2,003 adults about whether or not they had ever had supernatural experiences. The 18 percent who had seen a ghost was quite an increase from a survey in 1996, which only found that 9 percent of Americans had seen an apparition.
Similarly, the percentage of people who reported having felt the touch of someone who has died has jumped from 18 percent to 29 percent between 1996 and 2009.
This got us thinking: Halloween must be a tough time for real ghosts, because no matter what they do, nobody is going to take them all that seriously.

I had once lived in a house that had a ghost & I wasn't a part of the research studay! There were so very many stories. A few of my favorites. I had changed sheets on my daughter's bed one afternoon after doing the laundry. The next morning she had told me that during the night something kept poking her leg. She got up and turned on the light to find an Indian bead in her bed. Wasn't there after I put fresh sheets on it. Indian beads are rare around our place, though we did find "one" while living there. It was old Indian burial area. Another night my daughter had a girlfriend spend the night. It was just the 3 of us there, (plus our ghost)!! The girls had a tape playing when they went to bed, which turns off by itself when done. In the morning, the friend was packing up her things to go home and went to the tape player and the tape was gone. They tore my daughter's bedroom apart looking for this tape, (along with other rooms in the house) but not to be found. A number of months later the tape was found stuffed down in the couch. Not just under the cushions, but way down in the cavity of it. Neither of the girls had been downstairs after they had gone to bed. Another, was that I had asked a new co-worker to go home with me for lunch. She politely said no, but appeared to be uneasy about my invite. I asked her about it and she said she had heard many of us in the office talk about my ghost stories and she didn't want to encounter one of them! I assured her that she would not see the ghost, nor would there be anything that would happen while we were there. She went home with me. I had an old remote to a TV that no longer worked, nor had batteries (no longer had the tv either) that my grandson liked to play with. I kept it on an end table on one side of the room. As I was walking into the room, the remote came straight up off the table and it went flying across the room (apprx 30 feet). It was like someone had picked it up over their head and gave it a toss. Needless to say, my friend screamed and ran. I asked her if the ghost had harmed her, which of course it hadn't, so she was fine, but you should have seen her face and heard her tell of her experience to our fellow co-workers! I've since moved from the house and I actually miss our encounters with our friendly ghost.

I can't say that I am one of the 10% who have seen a ghost, but I most certainly do believe in the 'afterlife'. Now that, for me, has been proven over and over. I believe my loved one's who have passed over have contacted me in various ways from a song on the radio to certain thoughts that have suddenly popped into my mind. If I stated every single 'happening' here, I would end up taking up 2 or more whole pages just to tell you all about it! And I am not one of those people who believe that every single thing that has happened is a phenomena. I have had dreams where I floated around the house and saw my husband sitting, watching TV while eating a snack. He never saw me right in front of him because he thought I was in bed sound asleep, only to wake up and be able to tell him exactly what he was watching on TV and exactly what he was eating! I must admit, that not only freaked him out, but me as well. Strange, but true!

@ Ed ` Yes! I read up on that after it happened to me the first time. I have to admit, though, that it has only happened to me 3 times in my entire life. I discovered that all 3 times it happened, I was in a half asleep - half awake kind of mode. Kind of like when you're just starting to fall asleep or wake up. I wish I could control when it happens, but so far I've been unsuccessful. Another key factor was that during all 3 incidences, I was either under a lot of stress, or devastated (when my father died). That's sooooo cool that you can do astral projection as often as you do! Lucky, lucky you!!! lol

Sunday, that sort of thing happens to me on many occasion, but I've always known that I'm aware what someone is watching on TV because I can hear bits and pieces of the program since I'm not in a full sleep and can tell what they are eating because I can either smell it (even upstairs) or I might have heard them munching on potato chips or something that has a sound at crunch.

There are so many simple and rational explanations for what you describe that it is just downright silly to believe in ghosts, astral projections, the afterlife or any of the gazillions of other bizarre things people believe in. The only thing it proves is that people believe anything they want to. Ghosts, psychics, spirits, angels, demons, gods, sasquatch, menehune, chupacabra, the Bermuda Triangle, UFO's and alien abductions.

The only thing this proves is that people
believe anything they want to, no matter how bizarre and irrational it may be. Oh wait, a ghost just whispered to me that he was originally a pyschic who was killed by a chupacabra while he was praying to his angels and gods to intervene to stop the aliens from abducting him and taking him to the Bermuda Triangle.

@ Dot ~ I hear what you're saying and would accept that as a logical explanation, but my husband was in our living room downstairs and our bedroom is upstairs on the opposite side of the house, so I couldn't have possibly heard the TV. Also, that night, the snack he was eating was a popsicle! lol

You know what's really scary? The amount of spam that's being allowed to invade these messages. Same trashy crap on all of them. Hos dating grandpas.
In all seriousness, I saw something when my grandmother died years ago. It was just a bluish mist and we heard footsteps in the leaves along with the mist. We were only 15 so it scared the sh** out of us. Thirty years later, I wish that I wouldn't have been so afraid.

If they legalize marijuana, there will be even more claiming they see ghosts.

This really is on a small scale. So that number could be misleading. They only surveyed a small amount and you can't say that's all American. I would like to see them present this to a larger number to see if there's a difference in the percentage.
With that said, yes as a child I did see a ghost, in fact lived with it in my apartment for years and thought I was the only one that say him. A tall man dressed in all black with a black hat, who never showed his face, only walking away every time. I would mistake him for my father because my father is tall. But my father was always out of the house or sleep. I tried telling my parents but they just thought I was seeing things. It wasn't until my brother passed away in '96 that I learned that my siblings had saw the guy too and that my brother was the only one who saw his face. He had told my Grandmother a few years before he passed away and she had told me about 5 years ago. Very creepy. I haven't seen him since we moved from our old apartment.

If you think about it? We are all ghosts. The Universe is billions of years old. So? We are in the past, and this has already happened. Energy cannot be destroyed, but what happens to our physical energy? Moves on to a different plane, perhaps catching up with the Universe and time. We have a long ways to go, but the future awaits us all...Peace

We are not ghosts but we are spirits. There's a big difference. God gave us these bodies to be able to live on this earth and we live in the present, not in the past.

Make that "18 Percent of Adults BELIEVE they Have Had an Encounter With a Ghost". There are no ghosts, spirits, ghouls, or goblins. No hauntings. No witches. No magic. No spells or curses. No gods or godesses. No psychic phenmomena. There is only science, logic, reason, and clear thinking. Unfortunately, that reality is very hard to accept for most people.

I lost my son in 2007 he was 24, the first year after his death on my birthday I was online and this woman sho said she was psychic told me my son spoke to her and she stated to watch out for a red rose. The next week was my B-Day when I went to this resturant to meet my family I was shocked when my grandson walked it with a swingle red rose. I asked my daughter about how the red rose came about and she had stated she sent her son into a store to pick something up for her and out he came with her red bull and a singe rose she asked why the red rose and he stated it was for grandma tonight. I believe our loved ones are alwasy with us we have to stop and look for the signs
