Fur coats, sure. Jennifer Lopez's weird fox-hair eyelashes, take 'em. But not from our cold, dead, on-top-of-a-donkey hands will you pry this basketball, PETA.The animal rights organization is asking a Wisconsin high school to cancel a fundraiser featuring the sport, because the animals are pulled and shouted at when they don't want to play. Apparently they don't realize that's the whole point of donkey basketball: Donkeys don't do anything they don't want to do, so it's hilarious to watch your high school chemistry teacher try to get one to saunter around a basketball court for charity.
If that last sentence confused you because you're some kind of city folk that ain't never heard of no donkey basketball, don't worry -- we've got video after the jump of donkey basketball bloopers, probably edited by a high school student for class credit.
Do you really want to take the right to make donkey basketball videos for class away from America's children, PETA? Come on.

I don't think the taxpayers will be laughing when they have to refinish the gym early.

Krazy, that is the first thing that came to my mind, also. The second was, they do not let women in high heels walk across a basketball court but they allow donkeys? The third thing, the donkeys were acting like donkeys, the humans were acting like a$$es!
I had never heard of "donkey basketball" until I read this article. I don't care for it and do not think it is funny. Although I am not a fan of PETA, they may have a valid issue here. Animals should never be forced to perform for the entertainment of humans.

Had a donkey basketball game at out high school in the past, the donkeys wore "booties" and did no damage to the floor. PETA is once again being a pain in the A--. I have been to donkey basketball games and donkey baseball games, both are fun to watch and, in my opinion, the riders get the worst of the game in most cases.

They wear booties and the once a year schools have them come in, really has no effect on the gym floor.

I do not find this a very funny story. Donkeys are not put here on this earth to play basketball and being in a gym is probably very frustrating for them and Humas are not at all very smark human any longer. They are rather stupid utting animals in the building. There are barns for burrown and donkeys to go into when it is raining and storming and they go in, then they come out after the storm stops. Please Humans find your brains and use them and stop hurting animals all animals that is.dogs, cts, donkeys, horses, hogs, cows , wolfs and bears and all of the other animals you can name

that's one of the funniest things i have ever seen. PETA needs to shut there blow holes. The Donkeys were not being hurt. As a matter of fact it looks to me that the donkeys were kicking ass. No pun intended.

Donkey basketball has been played as many a fund raiser for 70 years that I know of.

So, because it has been done for years, that makes it right? Kinda like how people used to treat women like property, or African Americans were slaves, etc. Just because it USED to be OK once upon a time, doesn't mean it HAS to be OK now. Personally, I really like donkeys, but they are not everyone's favorite - if this were dogs or cats or some animal people love more than donkeys, people would up in arms about it. It's like any cause, you have to able to win the popular vote to get anything done about it! I say blindfold the teachers instead, that would be hilarious to watch too - have someone shouting instructions, now that I would laugh myself silly at!

I think it is a great way to have some fun. After all, we are all animals.

I have a better idea. Let the students ride on the backs of the participating teachers. Now that would be funny. Leave the animals alone.

If you "think" donkey basket ball is "mean"..you haven't seen Donkey Soft ball....The donkey's are not hurt, the player's who handle them could and can get hurt...So unless you have never had a fund raiser using Donkey's...please be quiet...
Thank you...The Management...

The people who object to the use of the donkeys in this article know little to nothing about large animals. Animal behaviorists have said such animals like cattle and horses did not go extinct because they were useful for other than meat and so were domesticated. Any animal you use to support your living you take good care of or you don't make a living! The donkeys are no strangers to slick floors and human beings acting like the hominids they are! If the donkeys weren't pretty acclimated to the noise and the silliness they WOULDN'T be rented for such activities! What in the world do you think happens to a surplus of animals, including horses and donkeys that have no use other than a pasture ornament? In this economy they get sold, shipped to Canada or Mexico and slaughtered! If readers are so disgusted by this activity I suggest you call the Bureau of Land Management and scream at THEM for the CRIMINALLY ABUSIVE roundups of the last few wild horses being removed from PUBLIC LANDS! Otherwise you are senselessly wasting your outrage.

Slavery was allowed for years, too. Does that make it right?

Wow, CHRIS8484, you've made a really compelling argument! PETA is stupid (no reason given to justify this claim). You suspect PETA has members that eat meat (no reason given to justify an already weak claim). Therefore PETA is a hypocritical organization (no substantiation whatsoever).
I take it you weren't on your high school debate team before you dropped out?

Clearly these donkeys are frightened. What's wrong with this world? What kind of owner of these animals would subject them to a loud, crowded gymnasium and make them do something that they don't even understand?

I agree, all animals have feelings. How about the "jackass" who rides the donkey be treated so inhumanely. The jackass would not put up with it. PETA is right, they should go after these jackasses who put these God-given beasts of burden to such a task. And we call ourselves humans? Animals are more humane than we are. Shame on the jackasses who treat the donkeys or any animal for that matter without the respect and dignity they were created for. They come from God, and certainly not to be treated like this. This planet is going in the wrong direction, God help us.

I am not a supporter of PETA and have seen dokey baseball. I feel that there is more than one point to be made here, first off if there was really any mistreatment of the animals they would completely refuse. I did find the video rather amusing and would have to say that some of the individuals riding were more mistreated than the donkeys. My other point would be that it seemed that some of the indiduals riding were rather large and depending on how long the animals were required to ride them, coould bwe considered cruel, also holding this outdoors instead of an enclosed gym would reduce some of the fear from load noises though it might cut down on some of the antics which are reactions to such noise. Other than the noise and size of some of the individuals riding it seems that the humans were taking the brunt of the punishment.
