We know the Internet loves a cute animal almost as much as it enjoys an odd-looking one, so it goes without saying that combining the two can create something special.

And now, with no further ado, we give you ... Heidi the cross-eyed opossum! The distinctive-looking marsupial with misaligned eyeballs has become an online hit since arriving at Leipzig Zoo in Germany last month.

Despite not yet going on show to the public, the 2-and-a-half-year-old has found Web stardom after a series of photos showing her in her new home went online.

A Facebook page set up in her honor has already attracted more than 67,000 fans and the cross-eyed critter has also become a YouTube star.

And her odd-looking stare is even set to be immortalized in a range of high-end, handmade cuddly toys which are due to go on sale in two weeks. Officials from Leipzig Zoo say the popularity of Heidi, who originally came from North Carolina via a zoo in Odense, Denmark, is both "surprising and unplanned."
