Movie mistakes and continuity errors are a form of film trivia that go beyond mere geekiness. Geek knowledge regarding films consists of knowing who a film's cinematographer is or being able to recognize a score's composer by instrumentation alone.

The film-mistake spotter is a geek whose enthusiasm has become corrupt. As opposed to enjoying a film and trying to find out more about it, they take the self-destructive path of poking gaping reality holes in something they love.

The beauty of this strain of pervasive rationalism is that it doesn't extend to the subject matter of the film itself. It doesn't matter if it's dinosaurs being cloned using frog DNA -- it's the fact that the hinges are on the left when he opens the door, but are on the right when he shuts it, that they find confusing.

How about this for a continuity error? THE BLOODY DINOSAURS. They're about 65 million years out of place. Whatevs. Spielberg is known for playing fast and loose with continuity -- but he's better known for having won two Oscars for best director and being worth about $3 billion. Film directors: 1. Continuity spotters: 0.


"Gladiator"
Ridley Scott's sandals-and-sand epic "Gladiator" heralded the rebirth of a genre -- a genre that promptly died four years later with Colin Farrel in "Alexander." But just how did old Ridley get those chariots to flip over quite so amazingly? With massive, quite obvious gas canisters.


"Titanic"
Okay, so "Titanic" came out 14 years ago now -- we think it's been long enough. On behalf of all men everywhere, we are willing to admit, that this film, as much as we derided it at the time ... isn't too bad, in fact we'd go so far as to say, it's pretty OK. Happy now? Right, and now to ruin it forever, here are all the mistakes in it.


"Full Metal Jacket"
Stanley Kubrick may be our favorite film director of all-time -- but even he was liable to make a few basic continuity errors. Luckily for us, this great video is dutifully narrated by an engagingly keen movie-mistake spotted. But before you watch it prepare yourself for the most nonchalant use of the phrase "bitch-slap" in the history of recorded sound.


Star Wars
We all know about the two biggest continuity errors and movie mistakes in Star Wars: A) The stormtrooper hitting his head, and B) Poor old Mark Hamill getting a dashboard face-lift between "A New Hope" and "The Empire Strikes Back." But did you know about all these?


Note: Star Wars is still so awesome.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"
And to think "Dances With Wolves" won the Academy Award for best picture that year. We mean, lets just do the math. "Dances With Wolves" = Kevin Costner + one wolf - no mutants. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" = five mutants - Kevin Costner. There may have been a great injustice. Trust us, history will bear us out on this on. As if to prove how awesome it was, here are all the mistakes in TMNT, and guess what? None of them matter.


"Carry On Camping"
Great news everyone. Remember that list of people more pathetic than you that you've been working on since you were 14? (No, just us?) Well you can add another person to it today -- someone has sat and diligently looked for continuity errors, not in some Hollywood blockbuster, not in some painfully cool art house film, but in "Carry On Camping." You're feeling better about yourself right now aren't you?


"Dr. No"
The gentleman narrating this video seems to think that the continuity errors in early Bond films were deliberate, as a nod to film buffs and fellow film professionals. We're not so sure.

Advertisers aren't stupid. OK, some of them are, but most of them know what helps things get sold: pretty girls. Preferably pretty girls wearing not that much, as seen in this recent viral hit from Romania, featuring models on bouncy balls selling (obviously) Asirom Mandatory car insurance.

You can imagine the ad execs at their round-table meeting now ...

It's total nonsense, utterly ludicrous, and has ladies in their underwear. Could you ask for more? As for the sexy words on the sexy advertisement, we bet you're wondering what they mean, eh?

"In case of an accident: get out of the car / and inspect the damage / ask the guilty driver for an RCA insurance policy / fill in the friendly ascertainment form / if you can't reach an agreement, a police officer can settle your dispute / always buy RCA insurance."

Some convenience stores are better than others. Like the ones that have everything you could want at 6 a.m. on a Tuesday morning -- a pint of milk, a Kit Kat ... an out-of-control Mercedes.

Security footage shows how shoppers and staff at this store are lucky to be alive after a car recently burst through the window and smashed into the counter.

Shelves went flying at this U.K. shop when a silver Mercedes saloon plowed through the glass. As this dramatic clip shows, it was a close call for cashier Amila Thilaksha, who jumped out of the way when the car pushed the counter into nearby shelving and almost crushed him.

Luckily, everyone else managed to escape uninjured -- including the driver, who may have lost control as she parked the automatic car in the cul-de-sac outside.

We've all fallen asleep on the train, right? Luckily, the worst thing to happen to us was missing our stop. This homeless man wasn't so fortunate; he was woken up by a rat running onto his face.

In the brief clip, everyone's favorite disease-ridden vermin darts around the carriage, introducing himself to the world, before picking on one man in particular to snuggle up to.

Dammit, it's just not fair: You're trying to catch 40 winks, and instead you catch a rat to the face. Probably some contagious disease, too.

A Chinese construction worker says he has spent more than six months learning how to make his bulldozer dance. He's also said he's suffered several injuries to the head during his practice.

Oh, Cao Bing, what are you like? Well, judging by the translation of his quote, pretty tired. "It took me more than half a year. It was very hard. I finally made it after tough training," he said.

That's what you get for teaching yourself to handle a bulldozer better than we can our own bodies (on the dance floor, at least).

Oh, and before you check out the footage, bear in mind that the break-dancing bulldozer drivers love a bit of rock and roll when they boogie their 20-ton vehicles around the place. Just as a heads-up.

Oh, and before any JVC fans get up in arms about our liberal use of the word "bulldozer": Please forgive us, we know they're actually front end loaders. Dancing about with actual bulldozers would be IMPOSSIBLE.

The date: Dec. 30. The place: Langford, British Columbia, Canada. The problem: The river's gone green. Not just kinda green but really, really green. Slimer-from-"Ghostbusters" green.

Officials still aren't sure who committed the act, but they're presuming pranksters. Whoever it was, they used "fluorescein," a synthetic organic compound used as a "fluorescent tracer" or dye to test water systems.

Langford Fire Chief Bob Beckett points the finger of blame at mischievous ne'er-do-wells.

"In all likelihood it's a hoax," Beckett told CTVBC. "It may be a nontoxic substance, but it's unfortunate that we had to utilize all sorts of resources to investigate this. "

Some people can suffer from allergic reactions to fluorescein on rare occasions, but fortunately the river turned back to its normal color in about an hour; plus, the fish didn't seem to be much bothered.

Our only real problem with it is the pranksters' sense of timing -= what we'd have done is waited for St. Patrick's Day and had a party on the banks of the river. Check out the unbelievably green luminescent stream below.

How it works: Besides the fact that it's cleverly designed to inhabit wall space, it's a simple color camera that just looks like a stray screw -- one you could easily hang a poster or portrait on.
Car Key
How it works: Click the button, and it starts recording. Simple, innocuous and tiny, it captures 640-by-480-pixel resolution at 29 frames per second, uses a micro SD card and has rechargeable batteries. It fits on your key chain, too.
ID Card
How it works: It looks just like your very own ID badge for work, except it's got a tiny hole in the front that captures 352-by-288-pixel AVI video and 1280-by-1024-pixel stills. It also recharges via USB and will fit in your wallet -- if you have a fat wallet, that is.
Teddy Bear
How it works: It's a cutesy-wutesy bearikins, with a camera for a nose. Less cutesy, but more useful. It's wireless and works well in low-light conditions. Which is ... creepy.
Calculator
How it works: Well, it adds up or subtracts or whatever you like, just like a regular calculator, but it also records high-quality sound and video to its 2 GB hard drive. Sadly, the solar power panels won't cut it; it will need actual batteries.
Exit Sign
How it works: Don't give this to your boss. God knows why you would, but just don't, as it would be the perfect way of checking on whether you were sneaking out early, functioning as it does as both a perfectly decent exit sign and a color camera.
Shaving Cream
How it works: This shaving cream can is capable of transmitting video footage straight to a receiver up to 500 feet away, but it does suffer from one obvious problem. Where would you keep it? In the bathroom. What gets humid after showers and the like? The bathroom. Queue one broken camera.
Crucifix
How it works: Live-blog your way to heaven with this wireless doohickey that also represents the sins our Lord washed away for us. Religion meets paranoia / investigative journalism. What would Jesus do? Buy a few, probably.
Coke Can
How it works: Though if you look at it with any great detail, it's obviously not a Coke can (the opening looks wrong, and on some of them, it spells "Caco Cola"), it is useful in many ways. It's a webcam, a security camera, and a pranking tool for especially dim-witted friends. Just don't put it in the recycling.
Boom Box
How it works: The radio works. The CD player works. Just don't use the cassette player, because that's where the camera works its magic. Then again, if it's playing music, the sound quality is going to be wack, dude.
DVD Player
How it works: What do a lot of robbers rob from places they rob? TVs, sure. Xboxes, yep. And ... DVD players. So stick a wireless video recorder in there and you'll grab a good snap of their faces in no time. Maybe.
Indoor Sprinkler
How it works: It won't put out the fire raging in your living room, but it will record it in surprisingly high definition as your most cherished items go up in flames. You've got insurance, right?
Toy Car
How it works: Don't leave this car in the hands of your nephew. He'll no doubt dribble on it, "drive" it into a wall or drop it into the cat's litterbox. Best stick it on a shelf or a ledge somewhere.

We know the Internet loves a cute animal almost as much as it enjoys an odd-looking one, so it goes without saying that combining the two can create something special.

And now, with no further ado, we give you ... Heidi the cross-eyed opossum! The distinctive-looking marsupial with misaligned eyeballs has become an online hit since arriving at Leipzig Zoo in Germany last month.

Despite not yet going on show to the public, the 2-and-a-half-year-old has found Web stardom after a series of photos showing her in her new home went online.

A Facebook page set up in her honor has already attracted more than 67,000 fans and the cross-eyed critter has also become a YouTube star.

And her odd-looking stare is even set to be immortalized in a range of high-end, handmade cuddly toys which are due to go on sale in two weeks. Officials from Leipzig Zoo say the popularity of Heidi, who originally came from North Carolina via a zoo in Odense, Denmark, is both "surprising and unplanned."

They added that Heidi will go on show to the public in July. Until then, keep reading to see a German news report about the cute, cross-eyed critter and the bizarre music video.

Connecticut's favorite motorway, the beloved Interstate 95, was blessed with a unique traveler recently, one who might not quite have the license required to drive alongside cars going at 70 mph. You see, he was driving a motorized wheelchair.

He's not the first man to take his mobility scooter onto the open road ... though, admittedly, the other one we've seen was just on a side road (and carrying a giant roll of carpet).

This man was sporting a natty blue coat and a pair of sunglasses (you know, because he's cool), and thanks to his get-up, no one has yet been able to identify him.

In other words, if you know the man in the clip below and can tell us more about his exit on the Fairfield junction, get in contact because either this guy is a living legend or requires urgent medical attention.

2010 was a good year for highly impressive basketball-based viral videos, but 2011 looks like it's going to be even better, starting with this footage of high school basketball player Austin Groff pulling off an impressive backwards buzzer shot. Just. Like. That.

Sure, it's just one move, and nothing in comparison to Kyle Singler, the b-ball trickster extraordinaire we met last November, but this wasn't done after 50 other practice tries -- this was done in an actual game, when it counted.

Though his team (Twin Valley South Ohio High) went on to lose to their opponents, Preble Shawnee High, the final score was close: 61-58.

He was there to show the public how to spot interesting sights in the night sky -- which made it all the more embarrassing for astronomer Mark Thompson when he missed seeing a meteor on live TV.

During the recent BBC series "Stargazing LIVE" Thompson had been advising people on how to identify constellations and see other things worth looking out for.

But on one of the live shows -- speaking from a field near the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics -- he said that cloud cover was so bad there was nothing interesting to see ... and that's when it happened. A meteor whizzed across behind him in what appeared to be the only bit of clear sky that night.

Unaware of what had just happened, Thompson then continued moaning about the cloud cover and lack of visibility, adding, "There's not too much to be seen at the moment."

However, viewers were quick to point out the gaffe and bombarded the BBC with phone calls and messages on their website.

Speaking after the blunder was pointed out to him, Thompson said, "I must admit I was oblivious to it. I think I'm probably the only person in the entire country who didn't see it." Check below for the video.

Pity then, poor Andre Hall from Pittsburgh, who came back to his home only to discover a lot of hay in its place -- all thanks to a clerical mistake on behalf of the demolition contractors.

He'd bought the house while it was about to be foreclosed but had successfully petitioned his local Bureau of Building Inspection to prevent it from being destroyed.

However, it seems that the house next door was still set to be taken down -- and the demolition team took Hall's down with it.

Hall had planned to move in with his girlfriend and his children in a few weeks' time, but now his $31,000 dream home is no more.

We're betting lawyers will be hearing about this.

A week-long amateur bullfighting event in Colombia has seen some 48 would-be matadors being injured after jumping into an arena to taunt 1,000-pound bulls. No, we're not surprised either.

This all happened as part of the Colombian tradition of "Corralejas," where crazy, wannabe bullfighters try their hand at the sport only to fail horrifically, for the most part.

Seriously, the footage below is not for the faint of heart. Think man-being-tossed-about-like-a-rag-doll-by-a-mad-as-hell-bull kind of thing, and then up the ante a little bit.

An average of 20 participants die each year in the six-day event, which has been going on for 150 years now.

But unlike traditional bullfights with trained, professional matadors, during Corralejas it is expressly forbidden to kill the animals. Yes, the animals you're throwing spears at and waggling red flags in the faces of -- those animals.

It was all going so well for Natsuki Terada. The Japanese runner was leading a recent marathon, but then he took a wrong turn ... with only about 200 feet left to race.

Terada had been competing for Kokugakuin University in the Hakone Ekiden relay marathon event between Tokyo and Hakone, and as he neared the end of his stage, the win appeared to be there for the taking.

You see, as he and three other runners approached the final straightaway, Terada kicked deep and powered his way from fourth into first place.

But then it all went horribly wrong when Terada followed a TV truck, which had been filming the action, as it turned down a side road. The problem: It wasn't going to the finish line.

So, about 70 yards from the end of the race, which was being broadcast on live TV and watched by millions, he made a sharp right as his competitors went straight on.

Police say it was nice and easy for them to identify a robber who raided a U.S. convenience store -- because his wallet fell out of his pocket during the attack.

Criminal master-moron Jeffrey Everly, 38, walked into a Minute-Mart convenience store in Kentucky and demanded money from the cashier.

As the till was opened, the hooded and dubiously goateed man grabbed at the cash drawer. When it ended up on the floor, he jumped over the counter to grab his ill-gotten gains.

But Everly then got into a scuffle with the member of staff and didn't notice his wallet fall from his pocket during the fight, meaning he probably felt pretty good as he ran off with an undisclosed amount of money.

However this feeling will no doubt have been short-lived, as police say the wallet containing identification which was enough for them to secure a second degree robbery arrest warrant.

Officers are now appealing for anyone who might be able to help them locate Everly to come forward. He was last seen driving a red and gray pick-up truck.

We're big bear fans here at Asylum. So when this footage from the BBC's animal doc "Polar Bear: Spy on the Ice" hit YouTube, we had to share it with you.

As part of the documentary process, a team recording the polar bears used a series of spy-cameras, hidden in "rocks" or "snowballs" to see what the bears were up to on the sly.

But polar bears aren't so easily fooled. Watch below to see the foreign white ball get promptly stomped upon by a big ol' bear.
