So the 27-year-old New Jerseyan made sure there was a not-so healthy dose of his chest and pubic hair in the turkey, egg and cheese bagel he made for the Evesham Police Department officer.

It didn't take long for the cop to figure out what was going on, and he had the offending sandwich sent to the state crime lab, were it was confirmed the hairs matched Burke's DNA.

Burke plead guilty to aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and retaliation for past official action, and was sentenced to 15 days in jail for his culinary crime.

We're sure Burke has learned his lesson, and will next time stick something a little harder to detect in his revenge sandwich. (We can think of a few things.)

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Smoking Will Cause Genetic Damage Within Minutes

Filed under: Health, Happy Hour Hero
Our happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies with.
When you inhale cigarette smoke into your body, it almost immediately causes genetic damage that could lead to cancer.

In the first study of how smoking effects DNA, scientists tracked the pollutant phenathrene, which is found in cigarettes, in the bloodstream of 12 smokers. They found that just 15 to 30 minutes after these volunteers took a puff, the phenathrene had morphed into a toxic substance that "trashes DNA, causing mutations that can cause cancer."

"The results reported here should serve as a stark warning to those who are considering starting to smoke cigarettes," the study's lead author concluded.

Yes, they should. But this is still all very science-y, so we would encourage smokers to just think about the guy with the hole in his neck who has to talk through that little machine.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

What's the Best Movie Remake?

According to our friends at FilmDrunk, Will Smith and Jay-Z are getting together to remake the movie "Annie," which will star Smith's hair-whipping daughter Willow in the title role.

If you're keeping score at home, that means that they are remaking a movie that was a remake of a play that was based on a comic strip.

At first blush, it would seem like this updated "Annie" will make a ton of money and not be particularly good.

However, there have been some darn fine movie remakes over the years, and we want to know which one you think has been best.

Let us know in the comments about any movie remake we neglected to mention, keeping in mind that the Coen Brothers insist their "True Grit" is not a remake of the John Wayne classic.
Did you ever think of just asking?

Comedy writer Craig Rowin did, requesting in a YouTube video that a kind stranger gave him that seven-figure sum just because.

Lo and behold, some wealthy eccentric took the bait, and will be presenting Rowin with a check for a million dollars in a ceremony Feb. 2 at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York City.

Read on to check out Rowin explaining his good fortune, and see a cameo from a popular sitcom star.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

First Two Years of College Are Basically Useless

Filed under: Booze, Happy Hour Hero, Weird Science
Our happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies with.
College students learn very little their freshman and sophomore years.

The book "Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses" came to that conclusion after surveying over 3,000 traditionally-aged college students. The authors analyzed the students' transcripts and their results on a series of collegiate assessment tests. More specifically, they found that 45 percent of students showed no learning gains in their first two years.

Despite this lack of acquired knowledge , the average GPA of a student in the sample was a 3.2. According to the book's authors, much of the blame for college students not learning can be attributed to professors who spend too much time focusing on their research, and not enough time tending to the needs of their undergrad students.

Another thing to blame for college students not learning? Booze.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Better Looking People Are Smarter

Filed under: Dating/Love, Happy Hour Hero, Weird Science
Our happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies with.
Attractive people have significantly higher I.Q.s than their frumpier counterparts.

Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist at the London School of Economics, had 52,000 people from the United States and the United Kingdom both rated on their looks and given an I.Q. test. Attractive men scored 13.6 points above average on the I.Q. test, and attractive women beat the mean by 11.4 points. The study controlled for class, body size and health.

Kanazawa's explanation for why attractiveness and I.Q. are correlated is that smart men tend achieve high status, allowing them to marry attractive women, and thereby passing both good looks and intelligence to their children.

In honor of this finding, check out our list of 15 women who have been blessed with both beauty and brains.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Are You Glad the Internet Exists?

With Asylum's cyber-death now just days away, it's only natural that we get a bit existential with our last Barroom Debate.

So, today we consider the Internet, the platform that has given Asylum its life over the last three years. Perhaps more importantly, the Internet has also completely changed the way us humans work and play and interact over the last decade.

While we were able to think of 10 good reasons for why the Internet revolution has been a positive force, we were just as easily able to think of 10 negative counterpoints for the good reasons.

Read on to check them all out, and, if you have anything to add, let us know in the comment section.
42 percent of Americans have at least one step- relative.

According to the Pew Research Center, who surveyed about 2,691 adults by phone late last year, 30 percent have a step- or half-sibling, 19 percent have a stepparent, and 13 percent have a stepchild.

70 percent of folks with a step- relative rate their family life as "very satisfactory," which almost matches the 78 percent of people with only traditional relatives who rate their family life that way.

Among people who have a parent and a stepparent, 86 percent would feel obligated to extend help to their biological parent if they were in need, whereas only 56 would do the same for a stepparent.

What step- relatives need now is some good P.R. to combat all those years of pop-cultural demonization.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

(Literally) Being on High Ground Makes You More Generous

Filed under: Happy Hour Hero, Weird Science
Our happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies with.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina conducted a series of experiments in which people were in higher locations (like the top of the stairs) or in lower locations (like inside an orchestra pit). They found that people were more generous with their money and their time, and were nicer in general, when in the higher spot.

The researchers believe metaphors such as "moral high ground" or "bottom of the barrel" may actually influence the way people behave when the find themselves in those positions in real life.

So, the next time you find yourself alone in the elevator with that cute girl from your office building, you should probably ask her out -- providing the elevator is going up.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Does the Golden-Voiced Bum Stand a Chance?

It was a story that warmed hearts: Ted Williams, a homeless man with a pitch-perfect radio voice was found panhandling on the streets of Ohio by a local journalist, whose video about Williams and his golden pipes then went viral.

Suddenly, Williams -- who has a long history of substance abuse and petty crime -- was the belle of the media ball, and got a parade of job offers for voice-over work .

Unfortunately, as our friends FilmDrunk report, things aren't going so well for the overnight sensation. Allegedly clean for two years, the 53-year-old has been drinking heavily, and that was a factor in his recent dust up with his daughter, which led to Williams being detained briefly by the police.

Now mustachioed guardian angel Dr. Phil has swooped in, sending Williams straight to rehab. When he returns, the media will surely be waiting.

Do you think Williams stands any chance of getting his act together? Or has his new-found fame left him destine to become an even more weather-beaten version of Lindsey Lohan?

Researchers from Ohio State University asked college students to rate how pleasurable experiences such as sex, getting paid, talking to a friend, eating a great meal, getting a good grade on a test or receiving a compliment were. They found experiences tied to boosting self-esteem -- like the compliment or the good test score -- rated highest.

Brad Bushman, a psychology professor at Ohio State who headed the study, doesn't think this is a good thing. He said he was "shocked" by the findings and worries young people may be inching toward self-esteem addiction. He also notes there is a fine line between too much self-esteem and narcissism.

We're actually hoping these college kids develop into full-on self-esteem addicts, because that would mean more sex and money for the rest of us.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Would You Like to Be the Chief Shark Officer of Shark Week?

Unemployed?
Well, then we have the job for you.

The Discovery Channel is looking for their first ever Chief Shark Officer (CSO), who will preside over Shark Week.

Requirements for this unique position are that applicants "must enjoy exotic waterfront locations, buff bodies in bathing suits and having the bejesus scared out of you. Looking delicious in a wet suit is a plus. Sense of humor required."

Among your duties as CSO will be swimming with sharks, who, as you probably remember from Shark Week, can be a bit nasty at times.

The CSO position doesn't offer much in pay; however, you will be attending Shark Week premiere parties, which the Discovery Channel promises will be "celebrity"-filled affairs.

No need to oversell, Discovery. Women in their 40s are more likely to go all the way on a first date than their younger counterparts.

A survey of 1,400 women between the ages of 20 and 49 by Men's Health found that 29 percent of 40-somethings will have sex on the first date if the chemistry is right. That's opposed to 28 percent of women in their 30s and only 17 percent of ladies in their 20s.

Perhaps this is because the older ladies just enjoy sex more: 86 percent of women in their 40s reported having an orgasm during their last sexual encounter, whereas only 48 percent in their 30s and 38 percent in their 20s had.

That's because cover girl Munn, who is staring in the new sitcom "Perfect Couples," is wearing panties which some folks believe are little too transparent.

"It's disgusting," said Dan Gainor, vice president of business and culture at the Media Research Center. "Maxim has moved their magazine from tawdry to full-on pornography."

Gainor then goes on to recommend that if a parent sees the Maxim in question in the magazine rack that he or she "make a scene" until the manager removes it from plain view.

We have to admit it took us a moment even to notice how see-through Munn's underwear is on the cover, since we were so focused on her pretty face. We've had a lot of fun writing about booze and gear and sports and entertainment and all the weirdness that makes the world so strange and wonderful.

And, of course, we've devoted a lot of our space to women, pictures of women, and the sexy things women do.

Five ladies in particular jump out at us as we contemplate the last three years. Now we want you decide which one gets to be Miss Asylum, a distinction that means little now and will mean even less in about two weeks.

Read on for sexy photos of each of our nominees and an explanation of how each woman has made her mark on Asylum.
There is always going to be debate over whether Olivia really speaks geek, but she was nice enough to give us a bunch of sex tips, and pulled an epic prank on one of our interns.
Yeah, we made fun of her thumbs and tried to get her kicked off the Internet for a day, but like the second grader who pulls a girl's hair, we only did it because she's so pretty.
There are two big reasons we've done an awful lot of posts on Christiana Hendricks.

Mandy Moore
As completely out-of-left-field winners go, you could do a lot worse than Mandy Moore.
We like to think our constant championing of the Golden Girl played a big role in her unprecedented reemergence at age 88. And if returning Betty White to the spotlight ends up being our legacy, that's a pretty fine legacy.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

First Kiss More Memorable Than Losing Virginity

Filed under: Dating/Love, Women, Happy Hour Hero
Our happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies with.

Most people remember about 90 percent of the details surrounding their first kiss, which is more than they remember about losing their virginity.

This according to an upcoming book by University of Texas biologist Sheril Kirshenbaum, called "The Science of Kissing."

Among Kirshenbaum's other findings are that women seem to place more value in a first kiss than man, yet also tend to get less satisfaction from this kiss than they would expected. She also suggests that men are more aggressive kissers than women because they want to flood their partner with their testosterone.

Sadly, when we think about our first kiss our memories have now been corrupted by a dreadfully horrible Ke$ha song.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Is Auctioning a Nude Photo of Your Wife for Big Bucks Creepy or Complimentary?

OK, that headline obviously needs a bit of context. According to our friends at With Leather, Andre Agassi recently did something strange while participating in a charity auction in Taiwan.

During the proceedings, Agassi suddenly announced that he would show a naked cell phone picture of his wife, tennis legend Steffi Graff, to the highest bidder. Agassi then started the bidding at $4,000.

Our first reaction to this was that if there is anything creeper than auctioning off a nude photo of your wife to a group of foreign businessmen, we don't even want to know about it.

However, upon further reflection, our view began to soften. In fact, it's kind of sweet that Agassi believes his wife of almost 10 years is so desirable that someone would pay $4,000 for the privilege of glancing at a tiny photo of her in the buff.

What do you think? Does Agassi's unusual auction behavior make him a creep or a somewhat misguided romantic?
More women are marrying men who are better-educated than they are and have more earning potential than they do.

A study by the Centre for Policy Studies, a think tank in England, found that in 1949, 20 percent of women married men with significantly higher levels of eduction (and thus more earning potential) than their own. That figure had jumped to 38 percent by the late '90s. While the data in the study was taken from Great Britain, this same trend of "marrying up" exists in the rest of Europe, Australia and the United States.

Dr. Catherine Hakim, the sociologist who authored the study, also found evidence that, despite this trend, women continue to downplay that they are looking for a higher-income partner. Hakim believes women do this because it's "politically incorrect" for them to give the impression they want to be a housewife.

Bad news for any fellow earning a humble blogger's salary, if we do say so ourselves.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Animal Fat and Water Don't Mix

Move over, birds-falling-from-the-sky and massive fish kills -- the latest scene of horror courtesy of the animal kingdom consists of 15,000 tons of animal fat floating in the Houston Ship Channel.

In this case, what happened isn't much of a mystery. The beef tallow, which is used for cooking and to make animal feed and soap, leaked into the water from a nearby storage facility. The Coast Guard used fish nets and pitchforks to pick out the fat, which congeals into large chunks (yummy!) when wet.
