Asylum Debunks 10 Gross Food Myths

1. Gum remains in the stomach for seven years.
This old wives' tale has been frightening kids for generations. While it's true that the human body is incapable of digesting chewing gum, that just means it stays relatively intact as it passes harmlessly through the digestive system. So keep the undersides of desks pristine and swallow that juicy wad. Wait, that doesn't sound right. On second thought, go ahead and find the nearest table.

Your 5-second rule myth is a myth. A year or so ago I remember reading of a study done at a major university (Columbia perhaps) in which they showed that you could let food go more than 5 seconds without any risk to your health. Floors make terrible germ incubators. The tend to be dry and cool, the exact opposite of what you need. In fact, you could probably safely put your food on a toilet seat for 5 seconds without much risk as well.

Swallowing your gum won't do any harm to your digestive system, but you can easily choke to death on it.

you should add as myths "money is dirty" and "gloves are better than clean hands" in food preparation.

That is a great relief, I thought I was 50% chewing gum before reading this article.
