College Sex Columns Under Attack

In his essay, "Revolutionary," Daniel discusses University of Southern Mississippi's president, Shelby Thames, and the open letter he wrote opposing the school paper's sex column, "Pillow Talk."

'"I vigorously oppose the printing of the Pillow Talk...and characterize the content as offensive to the quality and respectability of our student body and institution," Thames wrote in a letter to the editor run on the paper's opinion page. "This article was not, in any way, representative of the high caliber of our student body or our institution overall."

"What was the content causing such a fuss? In its short run so far, the column begun at the start of that fall semester has addressed issues involving foreplay, safe sex, the need for awareness about the spread of STDs, and the eternal question, 'Do love and sex belong together?'"
