New Toys for Girls Make Us Feel Like We're Still Living in 1950 {Lemondrop}

Sep 8th 2010 5:31AM You should thank the feminist movement for trying to dissuade women from financial chivalry AND bringing attention to male victims of domestic violence. Don't be confused by individual women you know. And don't expect equal time spent between men and women's issues this early. Have some perspective and patience.

Sep 8th 2010 5:26AM Right on! I can't believe how so many readers missed that. I also hate the way we're treated when we grow up, the shoddiest electronic put in pink packaging that doesn't sell to tech-savvy women, so we're labeled as being disinterested in technology. Hello! Isn't it obvious toy companies could double sales without marketing neo-traditional gender norms?

Sep 8th 2010 5:23AM Revisionist history if I ever heard it, Prinni. My own existence is thanks partly to the lack of rape laws in the 50's. And my husband might never have come into being either if we hadn't repealed miscegenation laws (against interracial marriage) after the 50's. As atheists we don't much care for red scare tactics that put monotheism in our Pledge (already written by a Christian socialist minister) and on our currency. You have a strange idea of respect for women among a lot of other strange ideas perpetuated because you somehow managed to turn out a great kid.

Sep 8th 2010 5:00AM You misunderstood this article. There is nothing wrong with being girly if that's how you or your daughter is naturally predisposed. There is something wrong if you buy this gender-coded nonsense and never let her know her options, when she goes with you to the toy store and only sees other girls on boxes holding baby dolls and boys building things. Toy companies act like boys never want "girl" toys and girls never want "boy" toys or sell them as unisex items.

Sep 8th 2010 4:54AM You apparently have never studied neuroscience or history, just regurgitate conservative sound bites. Differences in the brain are so varied across nearly 7 billion individuals that "gender" cannot describe any one set. Men are actually not more likely to have better spatial reasoning, nor are women genetically better multitaskers. Feminism emerged after the sexual revolution and until the 90's, was frequently derided for holding "prudish" and negative attitudes about sex. The flaw is a society that wants the freedom without the commentary - why so many responders have talked about a woman being able to do whatever she wants to do because they see feminism as selfish and only about women when sexism hurts everyone. This is not the fault of a single gender or entire movement. It is about a capitalist culture wanting to keep them in their place, distracting them from their intelligence and ambition to their appearance. (How long did we have to hear feminists were all hairy-legged bra-burners who look like men?) Feeding on fears that feminism makes women lesbians, or makes it difficult to find a man. None of that is true. That is resistance.

Sep 8th 2010 4:41AM "Unisex" isn't uniformity. Why is it so difficult to understand removing these arbitrary social constraints allows every child to realize their individuality? Also, it should be pointed out feminism doesn't mandate that every choice a woman makes is automatically empowering - it just allows for the freedom of choice.

Sep 8th 2010 4:36AM You want to be pampered, not treated better. You're one of the women who don't like that feminism asks for female accountability, that suddenly your intelligence and ambition are called into question and makes you feel insecure. You don't want to threaten men, you want to be adored for what you don't have to work for. As the eldest of four daughters who owned everything from Barbies to telescopes, my parents encouraged all of us to pursue our interests. None of us turned out Stepford wives. Neuroscience has NOT proved ANY of the differences alleged between the genders, from the good - women have a genetic advantage for multitasking - to the bad - women are less capable of spatial reasoning. (Why not consider other cultures who recognized more than binary categories of gender?)

You'd think these absurd offerings of kiddie toys would prove how influential social conditioning is...

Bridal Debate -- Would You Wear a Red Dress on Your Wedding Day? {Lemondrop}

Jun 10th 2010 2:30AM Gee, I hope you're a troll. Are you so traditional that your marriage was just an exchange of property between men and strategic alliance? I'm sure the traditional language you insisted on was "to obey." I feel so sorry for your bride for missing the beauty of mutual respect and partnership in love.

Bridal Debate -- Would You Wear a Red Dress on Your Wedding Day? {Lemondrop}

Jun 9th 2010 2:40PM Yeah? And you also dress your bridemaids alike and wear a veil to ward off evil spirits. A long of anglo- and euro-centric traditions are rooted in superstition and frivolousness. Do what makes you happy as long as you can afford it!
