Teacher Binds Girls' Hands and Feet to Teach About Slavery {ParentDish}
Dec 8th 2008 6:54PM This teacher was wrong, wrong, wrong! I don't care if her heart was in the right place, the intentions were wrong. This sounds like something one of MY teachers would've tried when I was in elementary school.....and were talking the 70's, pre Alex Haley's "Roots" miniseries. I get she was trying to get her class to understand the horrors of slavery in America(and the lesson was American History, not world enslavement and who had more slaves and what color were the slavers), but it's a lot more than getting bound hand and foot and crawling under a desk. There are more than enough documentaries and fiction based on fact novels("The Bondswoman's Narrative" by Hannah Crafts is one of the best out there, in my opinion)that show the horrors of American slavery. As for poster seanery1971's comment about teachers yelling at a student for acting up, yeah a parent would give the kid hell for acting out. I'm 39, and back then if a teacher EVER called me names like "stupid" or that I "can't" do something or like poster terry's teacher telling him he's "too dumb" to be in a class, my parents would be in that school busting down some doors! No teacher dared call me or my sister names without some teacher being called on the carpet for it.
Too much sex hurts Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) {BloggingStocks}
Nov 12th 2008 6:39PM The argument that A&F is losing money because of "lack of morals" shown in their catalogs is pretty silly. To add my chime to others who have observed, a movie or tv show can show simulated murders, graphic rape scenes, cars(and people in the cars)blown to smithereens, body parts scattered hither and yon, but show the butt crack of two young men strolling through a field shirtless, all hell breaks loose. I NEVER shopped there(and trust me I have excellent taste)because the price points were too high and the quality of the clothing not up to par. As for "me" and "Leah"'s posts, I'm thinking "me" is a bitter, self loathing person who has to belittle others in order to feel better. "Leah", if we still had those wonderful values of the 1940's, I would still be sitting in the back of the bus, not able to drink out of any water fountain I want, eat in any restaurant I want, stay in any hotel I want, and shop only in the "better" stores one or two weeks a month. Oh, and I certainly wouldn't be able to buy my home in the town I live in now(or at the very least, constant broken windows and a decorative burning cross on my lawn). The "good old days" are the product of a selective memory. Not every old day was good for everyone.
McDonald's makes plans for the McDouble {BloggingStocks}
Oct 31st 2008 12:22PM I have to agree with one of the posters, Bonnie. If all the McDonald's haters have so many problems with its hamburger styles, worries about the preservations, and overall complaints about fast food in general(calories, prices, etc.) there's something that is the fastest, easiest, most cost effective thing....stay home and COOK!! There are very easy ways to prepare just about anything on the menu at Mickey D's in a more healthy manner. It's so very easy to b*tch and moan about what's wrong, but cooking your own "fast food" means that the fat and calories can be controlled by that person. Of course the answer back is "I have no time/my kids want it/the food is already done". Gather up all the times going through the drive thru window and driving home to the family, or driving to the place, ordering and sitting inside eating probably equals the same time it takes to go home and cook a hamburger and some frozen fries at home(less than 20 minutes).
How (Not) to Break Up With Your Girlfriend -- On Wikipedia {Asylum}
Oct 26th 2008 9:07PM I think the real thing is this; act like a jerk, get treated like a jerk, he learned the difference between being classy and stayin' klassy!
The Best and Worst Dressed Women on TV {Blackvoices Main}
Oct 26th 2008 9:03PM I think it's pretty easy to forget sometimes that these celebrities do NOT dress themselves! The majority of the looks seen on the red carpet, for movie premiers, personal appearances and even just out on the town are thrown together by stylists. Why else would someone like Rachel Zoe, and reality shows like "Glam God", "Fashion Police", and now "Stylista" are on the air? It's a rare time that a celeb is seen in a look that they've put together themselves(maybe the terry or velour warmup suit, the droopy sweatpant or stretched out t-shirt shots the paps love to take), even the "casual" outfits with a pair of jeans, boots, a shirt of some kind, and a jacket are done by a stylist! I like someone like Whoopi Gooldberg, who at least has the guts to wear what she likes and feels comfortable in, not something she "should" be wearing, isn't afraid of a fashion misstep, and could give less than a damn about who says what about her outfit. As for tattoos, I have one, and BETTYEJ, the only cheap thing about me is that I shop at Daffy's. I waited until I was in my mid 30's to rock it, and it symbolizes the love I have for my parents in Chinese. The next time you want to dis someone for a personal choice, make sure you use the proper spelling next time, because all you did is make yourself look illiterate(tattoo=one, tattoos= more than one, tattoo's=not what you meant).
Baby On Board: Erykah Badu Expecting Third Child {Blackvoices Main}
Oct 26th 2008 8:35PM I get Avril's anger, but the last time I checked, a human female cannot get pregnant without the aid of a human male. Women aren't like lizards who, if the sun isn't warm enough and there are no men available to fertilize, only gives birth to girl babies. To blame one and not the other for single parenthood is very one sided, not to say rediculously unfair. Yes, women are mainly in charge of their fertility and it's up to us to "maintain"(whatever that means), but if a man who refuses to use protection because "he doesn't like it" or "I don't think about it" or gets several women pregnant around the same time and won't support any of the children for reasons as stupid as "I don't/only make girl/boy babies"(and yes, I've heard all the above reasons used at one time or another so I'm not exaggerating)or "she's a 'ho and it isn't mine", is as responsible for the plight of single parenthood and child poverty as any woman who has babies with more than one man. Somehow, I don't see that with a woman who has maintained a successful career as a multi platinum recording artist, and whose two older children are loved and co-raised by their fathers. Erykah Badu is NOT living in poverty, NOT on public assistance, and NOT handing her kids over to her mother to raise while she tears it up at the club every night and sleeps all day. She's a hard working, loving, responsible mother with a successful career who loves her children and has the satisfaction of co-parenting with her children's fathers. I may not agree with the "3 babies/3 daddies" formula, but who am I to judge her? Would it have been better if she married the guys then had the children? Then she'd be twice divorced with a third marriage and as many kids...so what???
Jennifer Hudson: Family Members Killed In Chicago {BV Newswire}
Oct 26th 2008 8:15PM I want to add my condolences to the (very)long list, pray that her nephew is found safe and sound and returned to his mom, and that a thorough investigation leads to an arrest and charges filed. I was shocked when I heard this story on CNN, and pray that the rest of the family are coping as best they can with this tragedy. Anyone who can actually post such hateful trash here just shows that they have no heart, and I really feel sorry for them when a tragedy befalls their family. Who will give them comfort and support? No one.
Reba McEntire Reincarnated? {The Boot}
Oct 19th 2008 3:09PM Look Reba is Reba! She's always been outspoken, a little "out there" for some, but personally, I like her spirit. I can't call myself a fan of Country music, but I enjoy her voice, and she has a great sense of humor and seems to not allow her fame or celebrity to go to her head. I'm a Christian who doesn't tell others how they should live or think or how to be a Christian "the right way". If there was only one way to be in the faith, there wouldn't be so many different sects of Christianity! Who really is she harming by believing in reincarnation? Not me, that's for sure!
Teen Girls Made Pregnancy Pact {News Bloggers}
Jun 22nd 2008 1:45PM As a past Catholic School grad(K-12), and a former Sexual Health Advocate at my university(and I suppose I could be classified as one of the 'teens from the ghetto' as I lived in an inner city neighborhood most of my youth and adolescent years(we were not poor, and not all inner city dwellers are poor, ignorant or on welfare, thank you very much), this blog makes me so sad. Here we go again, assuming that the majority of teen mothers are nonwhite and on public assistence. In reality, the first time women of color outnumbered Caucasians on public assistence was only in the last couple of years. This is an issue that goes beyond color and socioeconomic class.
Having survived "sex ed" at my Catholic H.S., I made sure I knew the real deal attending college by taking Human Sexuality courses and joining a group that specialized in health education (STD's and their prevention)and debunking the weird myths that come with sex and sexuality(two VERY different things!). I cannot blame single actresses(the majority of whom are grown women with careers and lots of resources)for this group of young teens making this pact. It's a combination of government refusing to pay for proper sex ed materials and not allowing a well rounded curriculum, parents who are afraid of the "knowledge is power"(kids know"how to do it" and will have sex like crazy, as opposed to the truth. Show a kid slides of SDT's and how they look, they will be so grossed out!), and won't do the job at home because THEY have no knowledge themselves, and immature brains who believe anything an older guy will tell them because they are so flattered by the attention(the "I'll support you if you get preggers" or "I'm sterile and can't get you preggers, so I don't need a condom"). I don't have any children yet, and I am so prepared; I let my friends and their kids know that if they need help with "the talk", I'm here for them, because sometimes a kid needs to talk to someonw who isn't their parent. As for the few years down the line they'll know how hard it is to be a single parent, forget that! The next 6 or 7 months will really knock them out, and pregnancy is the easiest part of the whole process! I only hope they break the stat that says that a majority of teen moms become pregnant a year or less after the birth of the first child.
Usher: 'Retired' Mom Not Retired At All {BV Newswire}
Jun 5th 2008 2:04PM I liked the way the poll asked, "Umm, is she a baskeball jersey?" when asking about Usher "retiring" his mother. I think he needs to realize that a person cannot "retire" their parent. He made the decision to cut the business strings from her, and did it very close to Mother's Day(bad timing and P.R.nightmare!). He can "cut the apron strings and be a man" all he wants. However, the arrogant assertion that he "retired her to be a full-time grandmother" just shows how much navel gazing goes on in UsherWorld. I think Mrs. Patton has the choice to be whatever she wants, be it a record label, a music manager, AND a full time grandmother, not her son.
