CFDA Award Nominees Announced by Diane Von Furstenberg {Stylelist (Main)}
Mar 18th 2011 5:41AM Wow, why do people always rag on these girls? They are 24-years-old, have been in the spotlight since infancy, and haven't had half the problems of most of their peers, like Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears. No arrests, no years in rehab. Yes, Mary-Kate has struggled with anorexia, but if you see her in her new movie, Beastly, she looks healthy and performed well. Kudos to them!
CFDA Award Nominees Announced by Diane Von Furstenberg {Stylelist (Main)}
Mar 18th 2011 5:36AM Mary-Kate has struggled with anorexia, but she's doing well. If you see her new movie, Beastly, she looks healthy and performed well. As far as I know, other than the anorexia, these girls haven't had half the problems of Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, or others of their generation. People should stop ragging on them when they're doing their best to carve out real lives for themselves after a childhood spent in the spotlight.
SmackDown: Should Parents Expect Pricey Preschools to Get Their Kids into the Ivy League? {ParentDish}
Mar 17th 2011 8:44AM It IS ridiculous. However, there is a private school near me that tests the kids to get in. They have to write the whole alphabet in the correct order, and one little boy we know didn't get in because he didn't have good enough handwriting. That said, whether a child can do this at 5 depends more on the child than the training. Kids learn when they're ready.
I sent one of my kids to an academic preschool that drilled them for 3 hours a day and the other to a Christian preschool where they played and learned Bible stories. The one who went to the academic school was ahead when she started kindergarten, but they were at the IDENTICAL reading level by first grade. The one who went to the Christian preschool has been an overall better student. I don't think it has anything to do with the school.
Preschool is not "warehousing," btw. I sent my kids to preschool to get used to other kids, and then, we had playdates with those kids after school.
The 2010 Underdogs: Poorly Reviewed Films That Deserve Another Chance {Moviefone Blog}
Dec 27th 2010 7:16AM Flipped was really good. I took my kids, and they loved it. I don't know what made them decide to set it in the 1950's. The book, which was fairly popular, wasn't. When I saw it, it was mostly old people in the theater, but the movie was good. I agree with the person who said Knight and Day too. I went with friends who had wanted to see another movie. We all find Tom Cruise personally annoying, but we all said the movie reminded us of what we used to like about him, and if he'd just shut up and act, he would have a better career.
A Good Night's Breast: Does Breast-Feeding Mean Less Sleep? {ParentDish}
Dec 26th 2010 5:45PM Donna, I breastfed. I never tried to make anyone feel guilty for bottle feeding. But I think people who brag like you are a-holes.
80 Percent of Married People Hide Purchases From Their Spouses {Asylum}
Dec 14th 2010 3:14PM I'm sorry but I wouldn't consider not telling my husband I bought a sweater to be "lying" or "hiding." I'd consider it to be not boring my husband with something that wouldn't interest him. Presumably, he knows I wear clothes. Yes, I know about all his clothing purchases, but that's only because he never wants to shop for himself.
Is My Favorite Baby Name Really Off Limits? {ParentDish}
Oct 3rd 2010 6:21AM When I was a camp counselor, there was a kid at the camp named Michael Litt. Even at 9 years old, he knew never to go by Mike! What were those parents thinking? It made me think of the joke in one Porky's movie. "Has anyone seen Mike Hunt?"
'Inception' Tells 'Apprentice,' 'You're Fired': Box Office Report for July 16-18 {Moviefone Blog}
Jul 19th 2010 9:18AM Maybe if they want "families" to go to these movies, they should strive to have them rated PG, rather than PG-13. To most people, PG-13 means don't take children under 13, certainly not under 10 or 11. That lets out a lot of families. Haven't seen Sorcerer yet, but Prince of Persia could easily have been PG if they'd toned down the violence just a tad. They obviously wanted it to be PG-13 and then complain when kids don't go. If I have to do a ton of research to see *why* a film is rated PG-13 (Is it just a swear word, or is there sex or a dagger through someone's eye?), I'm less likely to go. Definitely, I'm waiting until the second weekend, so I can ask around, and that's with kids who are 11 and 14. If they were younger, we wouldn't go at all.
Ann Taylor Accused of Photoshopping Models to Scary-Skinny Proportions {Stylelist (Main)}
May 26th 2010 1:30PM No way are these photos not photoshopped. Where do their internal organs go? Besides, Ann Taylor is a line for career women, not super-skinny cocaine addicted nightclub freaks.
Elena Kagan's Fashion Sense: Robin Givhan and the Nominee's Legs {Politics Daily}
May 25th 2010 9:11PM Perhaps she heard that crossing your legs makes one more likely to get varicose veins. My mom has bad veins, and I have trained myself not to cross my legs for the past 20 years. I am a married mother of two who wears makeup, long hair, prefers skirts to jeans, and has a career in a female-dominated field.
