Feb 11th 2009 2:53PM While I somewhat disagree with the article (A's & B's here), I think some people are missing a key point. It has to do with perception. When you hear someone's name, you automatically (and beyond your unconscious control) get preconcieved ideas about that person, perhaps based on a previous relationship with someone who has the same or a similar-sounding name, or even your like or dislike of a character in a book or TV show. If you like a certain name, you might be more open to liking the person right away, and vice versa. I hate the name Vicky and all because of one person I know with that name. Therefore, all Vickys that came in her wake work a little harder to be friends with me. It's silly, and I'm sorry to all the Vickys out there. I just can't help it. Therefore, if a teacher likes your name, you're more apt to get attention, help etc., and therefore might have a better chance at succeeding. Same is true at work- boss likes your name, you might be in a better position for a raise or promotion. You can "become" what people treat you as, so if you're treated a little better because of your name, it might be prophetic as to where you might end up in life.

May 8th 2008 2:59PM I can see it now....if someone should escape from jail, and get attacked by a bear, the escapee's family will sue the prison (and the town and the government) for knowingly allowing bears to get close to the prison grounds. Vigilante hunters will then be literally "loaded for bear", and the unfortunate bear (or bears, as I'm sure no one will have a clue which one of the group was the culprit) will also meet his demise. Heaven forbid we allow a bear who has attacked a human, even if on the bear's own territory, to go away unpunished.

Is there a movie in this? You betcha someone will develop one.

Dec 10th 2007 3:06PM I'm 51 and I'll be damned if I look like that. Over 50 doesn't always mean totally silver haired and overweight. There are many, MANY sexy and handsome/beautiful men & women over 50. How come us common folk are never shown in that light...only celebrities? If 40 is the new 30, then 50 is the new 40. Think about that.

Nov 7th 2007 2:45PM While hearing/watching AI contestents play musical instruments might be diversionary, where will it stop? Will AI add dancing technique next? While some play instruments, many don't. Some are great dancers and have great moves, while others don't. Adding in these other elements could be a detriment to someone with an excellent voice that has two left feet or doesn't know the difference between a saxaphone and a clarinet. After all, you can't tell if the artist is playing an instrument or swaying to the beat when you listen to a song on the radio. It's the voice that counts the most.

Here is an idea....when the contestents are down to 12, AI should have a Bonus show in which the contestent can choose their own song in their own style and can showcase themselves with playing an instrument or some self choreographed dance moves. It's a one shot opportunity to show the audience all.

I agree with others that have commented against the need to know the total background or community spirit of a contestent. AI should not be soliciting the hero or sympathy vote...this is a singing contest is it not? Maybe the name should be changed to American Hero Who Can Sing, Dance, Play Piano and Takes in Stray Puppies Idol. AHWCSDPPTSPI...how's that for an acronym?
