Lost in Translation: Awkward Signs from Around the World {Asylum}
May 7th 2008 11:21AM For years I worked in commercial aircraft design at Boeing, and often we would have to design bi-lingual placards for the passenger compartment. Each of those placards had to be proof-read by a customer rep for errors.
We found out that the "LAVATORY" placard that went on the bathroom doors translated from an interior Chinese dialect actually meant "FLUSHING WATER TOILET THAT IS INSIDE"
Hot Seat: Rescue Us From Recession {Politics Daily}
Jan 25th 2008 11:10AM My observation and experience with political parties and the economy is this:
Democrats spend away for government services to hand out.
Republicans reduce government and encourage private activity.
You citizens pay for your government on 3 levels:
1) Federal, (a president and a bunch of congressmen and 2 senators),
2) State, (a governor), and
3) District (representatives).
For my part of the country, there are 7 leaders in office on those 3 levels that I pay to represent me, whether I like them or not. Right now, 4 are Republican, and 3 are Democrats. My Democrats are the spendy ones (all in the top 10%).
War is expensive no matter who is in office. Republicans strengthen our own military forces and privatize while Democrats pay the UN to take up the conflict for us. Either way, it is expensive.
Pres Bush has at least done what he said he would do: protect our homeland and go out to break down terrorist groups and get a government in place to secure their country. Historically, that process has taken 60 years or more to accomplish (to run off the terrorists) in that part of the world. We have been in it for not quite 7, and people already call Bush the anti-Christ for facing up to it.
You get respect for doing what you said you were going to do, even when your popularity is destroyed in the process. It costs you. Terrorist leaders know that, and think they have the upper hand over us because of it.
I believe that because of the nature of the parties, Republican leadership would get us out of a recession more effectively than Democratic leadership.
