Jul 12th 2008 11:47PM Perhaps no industry has been hit harder by our country's "mental recession" than the mortgage banks, and two in particular, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, have been in the news lately after the Treasury Department hinted that it may bail them out. Although Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said today that a bailout is not "on the horizon" (but is somewhere in the troposphere) that doesn't mean you should rush to your neighborhood Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac store and load up on subprime mortgages.

Some considerations include geographic balance, ideological balance, as with Reagan choosing George H.W. Bush, or ideological reinforcement, as with Clinton/Gore or Bush/Cheney.

So if it's balance, that would mean Obama selecting someone white, and McCain selecting someone that's not a crazy old hothead.

Balance doesn't have to mean skin color, but for McCain, yes, you're right.

ABC's Charlie Gibson has been on the receiving end of some blistering criticism for the questions and topics addressed during Wednesday's Democratic debate in Philadelphia. If these wasn't bad enough—asking about patriotism, Bosnia sniper fire, and flag pins—we were forced to endure the ever-slipping pair of Gibson's glasses. It seems the lower they went the more smug he became.
