The Weirdest Laws in the Bible -- Go Ahead, Have a Locust {Asylum}
Feb 27th 2008 9:02PM This is a response to the comment made by Lou. When quoting the bible we must do our best to ensure the properly being interpreted. You quoted Matthew 5:17-19, and stated that Jesus arrival on earth did not change anything but expanded the difficullty of the law from actions to thought. This is not entirely true. First, if you look at that verse you will see that Jesus said i have come to FULFILL the law and the prophets (Matthew 5:17). With that said the entire law, and the law of the prophets was fulfilled by Jesus upon his death on the cross, hince him saying " It is finished" John 19:30. When he said that he was saying that everything he came to do had been Fulfilled including the law. Therefore upon its fulfillment the old covenant was done away with, along with its cermonial practices, and civil laws. This Fulfillment establish the new covenant, or the new Testament. We know we are not obiligated to live under the law anymore because in 2 Corinthians 3:6 we are called the minister of a new covenant, and as the Apostle Paul said we as minister of the new covenant are no longer obligated to preach the letter which kills (law), but the spirit which gives life (Christ fulfillment of the Law and beginning of the law of Grace). Further more we are also called administers of the ministry of Reconciliation 2 Corinthians 5:18. With that said, the ministry of reconciliation can not come from abiding by the Law, but is only administered by grace through Jesus Christ. As the Apostle Paul stated the law was only put in place to show us our sinful ways, Romans 2:23, in fact by trying to abide up under the law one dishonors God therefore, pushing him further from God, therefore no being by reconciled by God. Furthermore the laws other purpose was meant to point us towards Jesus Christ. Galatians 2:21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose, and also Galatians 3:19-26, Gal 3:19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary.
Gal 3:20 Now an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one.
Gal 3:21 Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law.
Gal 3:22 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
Gal 3:23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed.
Gal 3:24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.
Gal 3:25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian,
Gal 3:26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. There is much more to be said about this issue but unfortunately I do not have the time at the moment to continue on. I hope this has sufficed to show you the evidence that the law has been abolished (ceremonial, religious acts, civil) or rather Fulfilled in CHRIST, The son of the Living God, and Savior for all the world. Have a good evening.
