Apple's Black Friday sale {TUAW.com}
Nov 21st 2006 8:57AM I knew the day after Thanksgiving was one of the biggest shopping days of the year, but I've never heard it called "Black Friday." Makes it sound like the Stock Market just crashed or something.
Hey -- let's look it up!
Wikipedia lists several primary Black Friday definitions, almost all of which refer to either financial crisis, wars, politcal unrest, or natural disaster.
(Come to think of it, an Apple Store sale could probably be any one of these if you're the maker of any portable music player not named iPod.)
The specific use of "Black Friday" in question does get mentioned in the "other uses" section on wikipedia, although it comes third.
And don't get me started on "Cyber Monday." What is this, a TV show in 1988?

Ask TUAW: Name my PowerBook, please {TUAW.com}
Dec 3rd 2005 6:37PM The first G4 tower I bought was right around the time the Public Beta of OS X came out. Since it was the first contact between myself and this new "alien technology" OS, I named the machine Roswell, in honor of the dubious tale of the crashed UFO in New Mexico in 1947. The name stuck, and my current tower machine is "Roswell G5." (I sometimes refer to it mentally by the nickname Roz, which makes me think of a crusty yet trusted personal assistant with half-frame readers on a chain and a voice gone raspy from too many years of smoking -- as in "Hi Roz, Did I miss anything while I was out of the office?") My Pismo -- the last black Powerbook -- was "Dreamland," after the reported military codename of Area 51 in the Nevada desert. This was replaced by "TiBook," which was replaced by my current PB, named "PBXL" because of its 17" display. BTW, I'm not actually even really a UFO nut -- it's just that some of the names used in ufology circles strike me as cool.
