Should You Give Up Alcohol When You Hit 45? {That's Fit}

Jun 26th 2011 5:47AM I'm 74, not overweight, physical activity daily, zero alcohol, zero smoking, zero coffee, zero sugar, and a mostly vegetarian diet with near zero red meat. Guess what--I have diabetes and high blood pressure. Thanks Mom and Dad for the genes. The first thing people say is "but how long have you're eating and physical habits been this way" and the answer is, "since birth". I'm not a crusader and keep drink supplies on hand for friends. I just don't like the taste of alcohol, despise anything coffee flavoured, and smoke makes me cough and run at the eyes and nose. I'd be a poster person for the live healthy advocates and may not reach the actuarians predicted 78 year lifespan for american males. Winston Churchill had his drink(s) and cigars daily and made it to the near century mark so Im a firm believer in heredity.

Summer Trends -- The Outfits We Hate Seeing Guys Wear {Lemondrop}

Jul 4th 2010 7:22PM Not expensively but neatly dressed, groomed hair that doesn't touch the ears or collar, CLEAN SHAVEN, bathed or showered with not over powering after shave/cologne, cared for teeth and breath, and maybe a read book or at least a passing knowledge of current events and there is room in my life for you even if your not a Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt. I don't know how this "refuge from a trash dumpster" look has caught on.

30 Percent of Americans Don't Use the Internet {Asylum}

Feb 19th 2010 10:00PM We live in a group of four houses on an acreage well out in the country and I am the only one with a computer. Dial up is all that's available. Right now my wife, who doesn't use a computer, is reading "The Art Of Racing In The Rain", one neighbor is working in his small shop getting equipment ready for use in his annual very large garden, another is in his shop with his furniture restoring hobby, and I can't see what the wives are doing but I'd bet it involves learning on some level. We get together to watch Jeopardy, Millionaire, or 5th Grader and let me tell you these folks can nail about 95% of the answers. They read, they watch, they listen, and they INTERACT. Am I the one that's progressive because I have a computer; I think not.

Russian Soft Drinks with Stalin's Portrait Anger Veterans {Slashfood}

Feb 1st 2010 9:15AM One of the reasons the Soviets were so overwhelmed by the initial German invasion was due to Stalin having EVERY officer above the rank of lieutenant executed right after he gained complete control to prevent any potential purge. The stopgap commanders were brutal towards their troops because a failure to take or defend a position led to THEIR execution. The beginning scenes in the film "Enemy At The Gate" where the troops are carried to the front in locked rail cars and just every other one is issued a rifle are probably close to the truth. If Hitler, in his pure hatred of the Slavs, had not been so stupid the Russins would have gladly switched side and fought with the Germans to oust Stalin.

Should travelers boycott Arizona because of gun laws? Frommer leans towards yes {Gadling}

Aug 20th 2009 9:36PM I would feel completely safe in Arizona, it's places like New York City that worry me. The legally armed citizens in Arizona would not have cowered in their rooms while a piece of crap slowly beat Kitty Genovese to death over a half hour span as she begged dozens to help her. I'm old and sight impaired but I could have gotten close enough that my S&W 357 would have done things to his head that assured a closed casket funeral.

A good Samaritan in New York has 120 dinner guests -- every night {WalletPop}

Aug 5th 2009 7:40PM Could you follow up on this and find the name and phone number of an appliance store near him that sells new stoves. He won't have to go to his sisters to cook if you do.

New York Times to ask online readers to pay up {Daily Finance}

Jul 10th 2009 9:36PM We had a NYT paper in the outhouse back on the farm. After we found out it adversely contaminated the feces we never had call to have one around again.

Best Stargazing Destinations in America {Gadling}

Jul 30th 2006 12:05AM I think the Big Bend area of Texas is rated as the place with the least light contamination of any place in the US, or at least the National Observatory thinks so. It has it's drawbacks like heat in the summer and limited accomodations but the view is without equal.
