The Politics of Tipping - What Can I Get Your Folks? {Slashfood}

May 11th 2010 3:12PM I don't buy it. There are several reasons to doubt the study, based on methodology alone, as noted by other commenters: statistically insignificant differences in results, no control for regional norms, etc. Most importantly, it was a self-selecting, self-reporting survey. If you believe Internet polls to be actionable data, I have a beautiful prospectus for a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like you to look at.
Also, there are REAL studies out there, using valid statistical methods and actual numeric data that make me doubt the results here. The most important are the significantly higher levels of charitable giving from Republicans than Democrats, or from conservative than liberals, depending on the study. (Not all results in these are equally as strong, but they all tilt the same way.)
TO BE CLEAR, I am NOT equating tipping with charity! Please don't think I am. Tips are earned, usually hard earned, pay for services rendered. But I suspect that in most people's minds, the base impulse to "do one's part" is at play in both decision-making processes.

Shaken, Stirred or Stabbed? {Asylum}

Aug 17th 2009 4:58PM I've had one of these for years. It is a truly gorgeous piece to sit out on your bar. I highly recommend it for that.

It sucks as an actual shaker, however. The strainer is impossible to get off after you put it on. The thing is hard to clean. And it weighs a metric ton. Using this thing regularly (which you couldn't, since the strainer always gets stuck) would result in Popeye arms or elbow and shoulder surgery.

Roger vs. Tiger -- Who Is the Greater Major Champion? {Asylum}

Jul 6th 2009 8:41PM I play both. Tennis is hands-down the more difficult game.
No split-second decisions in golf.
Far greater test of fitness in tennis.
All the nervous tension in a tee shot or ten foot putt is there with every serve.
And when you hit your serve perfectly, there's still another guy in tennis who can turn your gem into coal.

Apr 9th 2009 11:06AM Witness was a crucially important book in my political formation. I read it in high school in the eighties, and I've never looked at the way the media and social elites lead us around the same way again.
