Obese passenger forces neighbor on US Airways flight to stand for 7 hours {Gadling}
Nov 23rd 2011 7:53PM I'm big. Not 400 lbs big...but big. NFL lineman big. (but without that size paycheck.)
Airline seats used to be big. They've shrunk.
I have walked across the Atlantic from Moscow to New York and back SEVERAL times to avoid cramping my neighbors.
I generally hang out in the aft section of the plane where the galley and the heads are to avoid cluttering up the rest of the plane.
Airline greed has shrunk seats. American bad habits (yeah, mine included) have made passengers bigger. For airlines to ignore this is unrealistic and inhumane.
Passengers stranded on the tarmac for hours at a time, nickel and dime fees for luggage, restrictions on ticket flexibility in case of cancellations...
The list goes on and on. The deregulation of the airline industry (thank you, Ronald Reagan - oh WHY did ANYONE name an AIRPORT after you...even one as bad as the one that bears your name?) is largely to blame.
Tim Wakefield Says 2011 Will Likely Be His Last Season {Fanhouse MLB Blog}
Dec 3rd 2010 5:38PM Wake! You're an inspiration to all of us older fans - I'm thrilled you can still play the game and enjoy it. My fastball was at best, about half the speed of your knuckler...Go for it, Tim!
Claire Danes Contemplates Return to TV, 'Teen Mom 2' Gets New Cast and More {AOL TV}
Nov 20th 2010 8:55PM "should OF been voted out?" Dammit, can't ANYONE speak or write English any more? (For the less enlighted readers here, that should be "should HAVE been voted..."
I've never watched the show (except for a few moments under matrimonial duress in which I have been subjected to the pretentious announcers promoting the program's product as having any importance whatever) but the idea that ANY ONE of those Wasilla Wenches have any talent to display strikes me as eminently laughable.
How Much to Spend on Wedding, Bachelorette and Shower Gifts {Lemondrop}
Oct 19th 2010 6:54PM OK...it was a second wedding for both of us. I was in my early 50s at the time, so maybe the rules are different. We were married in a very small ceremony with only a couple of friends and immediate family. Several weeks later we had a party we deliberately labeled as "not a reception" and asked to have their presence only as presents. Despite that, most people brought a bottle of wine or something else as a token. We weren't "starting out" so we didn't need toasters and blenders. A gift from a source I hadn't expected was a beautiful pair of hand-blown drinking glasses made by the son of our guests. They are abosolutely unique, graceful and delightful, and I think of our guests and their son every time we use them, which is often. My very favorite wedding gift (from either of my weddings) of all time. Oh yeah, I'm the husband!
Rush Limbaugh on George Steinbrenner: 'Cracker' Made Black Athletes Millionaires {Fanhouse MLB Blog}
Jul 14th 2010 7:52AM Hardly the first incredibly abrasive, insensitive and insensate comment made by Rush Limbaugh. Multiply divorced and a history of drug addiction, it's remarkable to think he has some justification for criticizing anyone else.
It's more remarkable that there is a legion of people who listen to him on a regular basis. It makes one despair for the future of the American Republic.

Feb 15th 2009 8:35AM Why would I want to travel with a picture of a sexy model on the OUTSIDE of the plane, where I can't see it?
Now, on the INSIDE...that might be something else.
Of course, I can remember the bad ol' days when planes weren't staffed by "flight attendants" but "stewardesses" who were chosen as much or more for their looks as any other qualities...
Gone are the days...(sigh!)....
Trouble for Newspapers Spells Trouble for Cartoonists {Switched}
Jan 4th 2009 1:25PM The Sunday comics (If you're of a certain age, you might call them the Sunday Funnies - even though many are not intended to be humorous) are a unique art form. High art? Perhaps not. Nonetheless, very diverting in their own way.
I read the Hartford Courant every day of the week, and I read most of it on most days. In addition, I read the NY Times on line, for selected stories.
A newspaper is NOT a "print newscast." The Wall Street Journal refers to itself as "the daily diary of the American Dream." A newspaper IS a chronicle, a narrator of the passage of time.
The comics pages reflect the culture - sometimes with some real relevance (Doonesbury) and sometimes with an antiquated look at the world: an earlier contributor to this commentary cited how little humor he can find in "Nancy," an opinion I share.
I enjoy some of the running "soaps" such as Rex Morgan MD and Judge Parker. Mary Worth, on the other hand, has an incredibly pedestrian pace and consists entirely of Mary sticking her nose into other people's lives. I can only imagine what kind of people READ that strip!
It's remarkable how many people take their comics seriously. Perhaps 25 years ago, the Boston Globe dumped "Apartment 3-G" for a comic based on the the TV series "Dallas." The readers complained en masse, and the Globe restored the adventures of the three career girls and dumped the sadists of South Fork.
The Courant has seriously downsized in a number of ways that diminish the paper. It would seem that the bean counters are obsessed with profit over quality and are looking for the short-term quick fix. Of course, this will have negative long-term results.
I miss the old Courant. Too many papers are biting the dust.
