Nov 3rd 2010 3:29AM Kathy, If you're happy with them, good, then stay with them. But, don't think for a second you are getting the same quality as a private docs. Having practiced optometry for 25 yrs., I know quality, and what it costs. Since there is probably less than a 1 in 100 million chance I would see you, it doesn't matter to me where you buy. I will tell you that with no-lines there is about a $150 difference between the cheapest & best lenses AT WHOLESALE. While you may be happy, I promise you that if you ever got used to real good lenses, like Carl Zeiss lenses for example, and then went back to your bargain basement lenses, you would reject them in a heartbeat. I've seen it over & over. There's a lot more to excellent vision than price.

May 27th 2010 7:15PM You bring up some valid points. I too am an optometrist. You and I both know that there are VAST differences in quality. I spend a good deal of my time straightening out problems caused by 'bargain' eyeglass places. The author of this article knows how to price compare, but obviously knows little about our field - and would probably be shocked to learn the differences in lens technologies and prices (at wholesale). I know of no place where the saying, 'you get what you pay for' is more valid than in eye care and eyeglass lenses.

May 24th 2010 7:37PM Protected? The SEIU's pension fund has been going down faster than Obama's approval. The frank truth is Americans are fed up with unions. They are fed up with rediculous demands for pay scales that far exceed the job value, and rediculous benefits that send our companies & jobs flying overseas. Don't forget, we pay for it. Your fellow Americans, the rest of us who can't get such benefits or had to make our own way, we pay for it in everything we buy. Worse, we pay for it when the economy tanks. The avg. GM car, that we pay through the nose for, costs US many thousands extra because of unreasonable union benefits - actually $1,500 per car JUST in 'cadillac' health plans (no pun intended). Unions have been blackmailing us and thumbing at us for many years - then they complain when companies run for cover. Hershey's just opened a new plant in Mexico - the reason? High taxes and high union demands. Now we can all enjoy our 'Great American Chocolate Bar', made in Mexico. So, who supports unions and high taxes --- democrats. I know democrats and unions are going out-of-favor because I'm a life-long democrat and you can see how even I feel. Teacher salaries were once too low and education poor. Gov kept putting more & more money into it, and do we have better education. No, now we have poor education AND unionized teacher salaries that are bankrupting our states. Can gov solve any problem? I'm beginning to believe Reagan, who said, "Government does not solve problems; it subsidizes them." -Ronald Reagan-

May 20th 2010 4:19PM I'm a registered dem. I think we will loose big in Nov. However, we won't loose everywhere. Ca. is a liberal stronghold. Someone like Boxer may have only one place in the country she could get re-elected, and that's Ca. A dem just pulled out a victory in Pa. too. Of course, the area is 2-to-1 democratic, and he campaigned on smaller gov., pro-guns, pro-life, and said he would have voted no on cap & trade and the HC bill ....wow. Boxer will get votes from the left, minorities, and students. Love the students. A man-on-the-street recently went to Berkley. Most couldn't name the VP, and 0-out-of-10 could name the Speaker of the House. ...and we let them vote? I think they get their news from John Stewart - now that's real comedy. May 18th 2010 6:37PM Yep, a more informed electorate would be nice, and an unbias media would help. This is why we had an electoral college to begin with (which has evolved to a state-by-state popular vote). I see the Tea Party goers closely aligned with republican ideology, but not in every case, such as repubs who voted for the stimulus & overspending. I consider myself a tea partier, yet I'm a registered dem. I just realize that we simply can't afford what we are spending, no matter how worthy the cause - it puts our country in jepardy - which ultimately puts the poor at even greater risk. If we go bankrupt, there will be nothing for even the most needy, so we MUST prioitize in order to protect our most vital programs. BTW, you can't outlaw TV advertisement (unless you're a socialist) - that would violate the 'freedom of speach' clause. Please think before you spout off, and PLEASE, please read our constitution - it could be enlightening.

May 15th 2010 4:02PM She is a very accommplished person. That said, there is now little doubt that Mr. Obama is not the moderate, Fiscally responsible person he campaigned as. Buyers remorse now abounds, as this registered dem well knows. So, we can expect a left wing ideolog who upholds a version of our constitution seen through that prism - a progressive, evolving constitution - rather than original intent. She will represent a segment of our population, but not the vast majority. Problem is the word 'represent' - she will probably be proactive & legislate from the bench, rather than just protect & defend the constitution. So, she'll join the left. However, the good news is that one liberal is replacing another & balance will be maintained. It's the next one that scares me. (said I'm a dem, not a liberal)
