As far as wiping out the breed, you would have to wipe out cruel, nasty, aggressive, cowardly people - because so many of them TRAIN the pits to attack. There are kind, compassionate, intelligent owners of pits who treat their animals properly and are rewarded with a loving, loyal and gentle companion.

Mar 15th 2010 9:01AM You 'set up' the reader's response by your description of the pit and owner..."black, muscular pit bull", "youngish" owner to indicate problem dog with irresponsible dog owner. The fact that the female owner of the other dog could "split" the dogs definitely shows that the pit WAS NOT aggressive, nor did he attack her when she began hitting/kicking him. SHE was the one out of control, not the dog. After she accomplished her goal of splitting the dogs she should have leashed her dog, asked the pit owner to do the same, perhaps lectured the pit owner and then left to return at another, calmer time. She made a bad situation worse. If she had hit/kicked my dog she would have had a law suit. As attorney, she had no grounds for that behavior once the dogs were separated.

Dec 14th 2009 9:01AM Dalmations - deaf; labs and shepherds - hip dysplasia; collies - bred for smaller eyes resulting in blindness; breathing problems for the pugs, boxers, bulldogs, etc.; all for greed. One breeder of Great Danes bragged about putting an entire litter down because they had "white toenails"....I told him if he was looking for perfection, he certainly missed the mark, he was overweight, acne scarred face, terrible teeth, and was generally unappealing physically....he should have been put down if perfection was the goal.
