Should kids sleep in parents' bed? {ParentDish}
Oct 11th 2008 12:35AM Since birth my daughter has had a strange attachment to me, knew when I was in the room and would not allow anyone to put her in her bassinet, she wanted mommy, so yes she slept in my bed. She's 9 and still sleeps in my bed from time to time. My 6 year old also slept in my bed during the night for feedings, he was bottled fed and it was our time to bond all snuggled in bed and guess what, he still sleeps with me from time to time. I think for me the only idea of perversion comes from the families like the one down the street from me where the teenage children still sleep with mom and dad. I think when the kids know how they were conceived and where it gets a little weird, but just my thoughts. Good luck Rachel since this was supposed to help you.
Physicians group wants FDA to ban children's cold medicines {ParentDish}
Oct 6th 2008 2:44PM I'm in the health care field and believe that we should not ban these item. My kids can get nasty coughs that keep them up all night long, I don't want to give them a cough drop they can choke on and they need sleep to help their bodies fight the little bugs. The only option I have then is to give them cough and cold medicine, or a tussin medicine. The sure way to keep this in check is to keep the med admin form handy and know your child's weight! Not there age, my daughter is small for her age and thats when you end up with overdose. also never double dose, keep a written record if you share parenting duties, use a medication spoon, or cup or dropper. Never give your infant children's medicine and if you have questions call your doc's answering service. Parents please be responsible, I don't want to lose a medication my kids need because you can't be responsible.
Breast milk lacks vitamin D {ParentDish}
Aug 27th 2008 6:57PM Rachel, I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic and on that note I will continue. We just had this discussion in my medical class last month. The reason that children didn't show a deficiency years ago is because we didn't have SPF 300 that blocked all UV rays. Our body is a wonderland to quote John Mayer we incubate humans and feed them with just our little old bodies but they HAVE to have certain things to maintain our natural balance. When you block ALL UV rays as these sun blocks do and never let your child outside without being covered from head to toe you are depriving your body of vitamin D. This vitamin helps with diseases like rickets but also helps in calcium absorption in older women. My children are outside right now no sunscreen with the light coming through the leaves of our 30 year old tree getting some great vitamin D!
Michael Phelps' mom talks about ADHD {ParentDish}
Aug 20th 2008 3:25PM This article came at the best time for me! My daughter suffers from ADHD and takes daily meds. Today we spent 20 min trying to convince her to go to school and she would make friends and that she wasn't that different from the other kids. She is the only one in her class that takes meds at school and sometimes if she gets to silly the kids will start asking "Have you taken your meds today?" Its nice to know that other mothers out there struggle with this imbalance and that kids have role models such as Michael Phelps and Ty Pennington from Extreme Home Makeover to look up to. I can't wait to read her this story and let her know ANYTHING is possible!
Dress code blamed for teen's murder {ParentDish}
Aug 18th 2008 11:36PM What about the fact that these people would be the first to scream if the school HAD in forced the dress code and said he wasn't allowed to "express" himself. Whats a school to do if they get sued every which way? I guess it's damned if you do and damned if you don't. I think after this young man that will never get to live out his life, I feel the most sorry for the school district that will spend money on a worthless lawsuit.
At what age is it ok to leave kids home alone? {ParentDish}
Aug 16th 2008 6:35PM I have been leaving my oldest at home with his siblings since he was 12, he's 15 now. It was only for short trips to the store of an erand here and there at first then it moved into longer periods of time. I called my state to find out when I could leave him alone, and they said at 12 if you feel he/she is responsible and could take care of themselves.
Early puberty - how to help them through it {ParentDish}
Aug 14th 2008 1:49PM OMG I read that book at 11 and still have it to give my children!! Kinda cheesy, didn't really get all points across but a good jumping off point. The next one after "Whats happening to me?" is "Where did I come from?" Thats a laugh riot! My daughter read it handed it back to me and said "I will NEVER have sex!" and walked off! I can only hope!
Preschooler investigated for threatening his friends {ParentDish}
Aug 2nd 2008 9:05PM I live here in Colorado and in the original story on 9news.com it stated that the child had many issues and this was basically the straw that broke the camels back. I'm not saying that the school was in the right or that they were wrong. I don't work there and have to deal with this child and parent. I do have to say though that if you have never worked in a daycare you should cut the school a little slack. Ive been kicked, bitten, cussed out, spit on and then told that I need to be more compassionate to the child because of this or that. Ive had parents tell there children they don't have to listen to me because I'm not their parent and then leave for 10 hours to go to work and then to the gym and to the mall to pick up a gift etc. Ive had parents come to pick up their kids LATE not just 5 min but close to an hour and then yell at me because I have to charge them. Daycare workers are generally underpaid, overworked and unappreciated. Thats why I no longer work for daycares.
School district gets tough on dress code violators {ParentDish}
Aug 1st 2008 6:50PM Ok was actully joking a bit, forget people either don't get my sense of humor especially when its online or really don't like it! I'm sure it is tough when you have only one school, and still most of my kids clothes would be out. My son's middle school had a very strict dress code and yes he was told a number of times that he was in violation, luckily he didn't get suspended. I'm sorry if you took offense I was just shocked at the extent of this dress code, my goodness I'm sure I would have been in violation when I was in high school and that was 20 years ago!
