Happy Birthday, Langston Hughes! {BV Black Spin}

Feb 1st 2012 5:15AM 110 years, and the art of Langston Hughes still strikes deeper and truer than ever. Heed The Call.

Has Christopher Plummer Made Peace With 'Sound of Music'? 'Oh, God No' {PopEater}

Jun 5th 2011 2:40PM Fans have a responsibility to be knowledgeable and respectful, not myopic and fanatical to the point of selfish zealotry. From Sophocles to Shakespeare and more, Christopher Plummer has given -and continues to provide- much enjoyment and enlightenment to the world through his decades of work. This deserves more than blind worship, misplaced feelings of jilted affection, or other jaded by-products.

Helena Bonham Carter & Why We Love Her Style {Stylelist}

May 26th 2011 7:13PM Happy Birthday to a great artist, and one extremely beautiful person.

The Snarky Campaign to Send M. Night Shyamalan Back to Film School {PopEater}

Apr 17th 2011 6:47PM Where were naysayers like this when Irwin Allen was proclaimed
a genius for DECADES of schlock such as LOST IN SPACE and THE TOWERING INFERNO?!! Like him or not, Shyamalan can tell a story
on film which, frequently, rates among the idiom's finest. The
bashing of Shyamalan -by disgruntled media and frustrated fans
alike- has gone way overboard, to the point of being shameful.

Agent on Derek Jeter: '(His) Impact Cannot Be Overstated' {Fanhouse MLB Blog}

Nov 4th 2010 5:31PM It's amazing that anyone would throw doubt upon the priceless value of Derek Jeter as a New York Yankee. With Joe Torre, Jeter is the force that gave the Yankees a whole new perspective as a baseball team; inspiring strategy and team play instead of the Home Run Derby types that the team occasionally slides back into. This man has earned his preceding salary many times over, and the Yankees franchise has certainly benefited competitively and financially from Jeter's spirited play and sportsmanship a thousandfold. Derek Jeter has earned his right to a proper salary for the future, just as he has earned an esteemed place in the annals of sports history. Yankees, do right!

'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' Star Kevin McCarthy Dies at 96 {PopEater}

'Hobbit' Fans Have Long Road to Final Release {PopEater}

Jul 4th 2010 6:16PM I really hope that Peter Jackson directs THE HOBBIT films. He's the best suited to helm the projects, since 1) his expertise at
depicting Tolkien on screen is unquestionable(!!), and 2) he'd
be at home doing this years-spanning project Why import another
director when the right person for the job is right in the locale's back yard? Too much wrangling has wasted too much valuable time already. To the studio, respectfully: Give Jackson the green light, and get this done.

Film Archive Re-Discovers Rare Silent Movies {Moviefone Blog}

Jun 8th 2010 11:25AM Great news. Great to know that there are still possibilities for saving vintage cinema. Even items that have been strengthened and cleaned up miraculously (the KINO edition of Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS comes to mind) still have whole sections that are missing. Even early sound epics, such as the 1930s ALICE IN WONDERLAND (Charlotte Henry, W.C. Fields, etc) are being carelessly released on disc with parts missing. Definitely work to be done.

Top Country Albums Even Country Haters Should Own {The Boot}

Mar 13th 2010 7:04AM This Black person is into Jazz, from Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk to Billie Holiday, Randy Weston, David Murray and on. I love Music, whether it's Johnny Cash or Tracy Chapman, Vladimir Horowitz or Taj Mahal, The Dixie Chicks, The Judds, and more. Lists which are supposed to be general need to show a more balanced respect of an entire musical field, not just an overload on any one part, old or new.
(Don't know what "they" listen to, whoever "they" are supposed to be. BET or MTV, pop fizz and mindless dribble knows no color barrier......)

CQ Fires Senior Editor for Questioning Layoffs, Ignites Online Backlash {Politics Daily}

Sep 30th 2009 12:21PM Sad thing is, as pathetic as this case is, it's not an isolated
incident. I was fired from an appraisal firm three years for
addressing a supervisor's professioanl misconduct. While I and
co-workers were busy on the phone and elsewhere, the supervisor
storms in & starts screaming that we're going too slow... while
we're on the phone with clients! She made this humilating tirade
for the benefit of the whole floor, so I sent her a firm but
respectful Email questioning the ethical strength and necessity
of such tactics. I cc'd the Email to every person who heard her
fit, and this she used as the excuse to fire me. I never even got
a copy of the dismissal paper I was asked to sign (which, since
the charges on them were false, I had to amend, much to their
chagrin!).
On a finer note, a short time after this happened, I was recalled
to the full time County job from which I was laid off two years
ago. The appraisal firm went bankrupt barely a year later. Justice
can be slow and bewildering, sometimes, but it does come. I hope,
Mr. Nutting, that it goes well for you. You've earned it.
