When a hand held transmitter is close to a receiving antenna a phenomenon Called "front end overload" can desensitize a receiver. The result of decreased sensitivity can possibly lead to missed communication. Lap tops also have transmitters on them (WIFI). So don't be a dip-wad. When the nice lady tells you to turn them off then do so and stop complaining.
