Director of '2012' Destroys Rome, Spares Mecca {Politics Daily}
Nov 7th 2009 9:11PM Well, Roland knew that Roman Catholics's, in spite of their own idiosyncratic secular rantings and ravings, would understand the Holy See's on-screen demise for what it is: blockbuster fireworks. Emmerich also knew that religionists of the other major religion would not be tolerant had his latest fire and brimstone cinema graphics included the other Holy City.
Michele Bachmann's Capitol House Call: 'Get Your Hands Off My Health Care!' {Politics Daily}
Nov 5th 2009 11:04PM Well, if Michelle had the brain to realize that health care coverage for 96% Americans equals freedom from worry and provides an umbrella to shelter those through stormy ill health, she'd have to redefine "freedom." This woman is the same who complained that if universal health care passed, she would be forced to endure long waits in the reception room before she could see a doctor! Yet, the Bachmann forgets that we, the people, pay for her cadillac insurance policy which precludes her EVER having to endure such a trauma!
Is Scientology a Cult? Is Paul Haggis the Next Martin Luther? {Politics Daily}
Oct 29th 2009 7:04PM In truth most religions are "cults." Objective scrutiny reveals that Scientology's Xenu and thetans have parallels in the inscrutable powers ascribed to Catholic saints, pagan deities and Hindu gods. Voodoo and the lesser known Abaku subject initiates to rigorous arcane rituals including what foods and clothes are and are not acceptable. Joseph Smith's own version of Xenu is the prophet Mormon. Mormon's compendium of beliefs, inscribed on golden tablets,are rooted in his dealings with Pre-Columbian civilizations over 1,000 years prior to the founding of LDS in 1830. Joseph Smith, a barely literate person, translated and interpreted these tablets. In the realm of religion, it's best to regard any adherents' faith as "to each his/her own."
Ripping Off Writers Since 1852: The Literary Industrial Complex {Politics Daily}
Oct 25th 2009 11:18AM Forget the writer's industrial complex. Why the internet has made everyone a writer. Pundits, plagiarists, profiteers, prepubescents, even politicians, have taken to pounding on the their keyboard sending, at the click of button, their thoughts along with solecisms and synretism rife with grammatical errors - around the world in a nanosecond. What most bang out is another story. But one person's passion for facts, factions or fiction can be another person's passion,faction or fiction too, so everybody can find something they like and feel happy and connected to similar minds. And best of all, it's free. Forget Iowa and Sewanee.

Why Is Dick Cheney Helping Obama? {Politics Daily}
Oct 25th 2009 10:36AM While some comments accuse Scorn of perpetrating a liberal attack on Cheney and others make note of Cheney's security "experience," facts are facts. Whatever our political POV, when impartially examining Cheney's performance during his 8 year tenure one must ask candidly WHAT exactly did HE do to make America more secure? FACT: he ignored warnings about ben Laden fixating instead on Sadaam. FACT: it was during his watch that America was attacked by terrorists. FACT: he and the administration propagandized the WMD myth, used it to invade Iraq as a consequence was forced to put Afghanistan on the back burner while focusing on the protracted civil war that killed so many Americans. FACT: he and his cohort Rumsfeld neglected to increase troops in Afghanistan instead drawing off troops to augment the Iraqi surge. FACT: as a result of Cheney and company's reduction of troops already spread thin, the Taliban regained territory. FACT: Cheney didn't do much in the way of improving our national security but he did help start two wars which we have not won! FACT: Cheney pushed through the spy-on American citizens' Patriots Act in an effort to squash any negative backlash: he knew the escalating failures of the wars would eventually provoke a national outcry. FACT: Cheney's anti-Obama statements testify to another FACT: due to his overwhelming pride and sense of righteousness, he is incapable of making any honest self-appraisal of his actions. FACT: Cheney remains a megalomaniac obsessed with delusions of grandeur.

Race and the Right's Paranoid Obama Conspiracies {Politics Daily}
Oct 20th 2009 10:45PM From 1960 -1963, Dallas was a hotbed of right-wing extremism. The John Birch Society had labeled JFK an "enemy of the people," accusing him of being a communist and having already handed over the government to the enemy. Swastikas were painted on Jewish-owned businesses. And a flag was raised upside down to illustrate the end of democracy. The Peace Corps was vilified as a propaganda machine to further JFK's family ambitions. And when news of JFK's assassination was reported in the classrooms, it's been alleged that (some) kids cheered! The creator of hate talk radio, the infamous Fr Coughlin, derided FDR as a communist and member of the putative but wholly specious cabal the Protocols of Zion during his weekly on-air gab fests. FDR was so incensed he sent Joseph Kennedy to deliver confidential "words of warning" - cease and desist or suffer the consequences - to the Catholic priest. Apropos, all of our political leaders have endured the crucible of political calumnies; have been buffeted by the malicious manias of The Fringe. President Obama is just the latest object of the perennially inane, people who reside between a rock and hard place. Race, given the examples above, may not be the primary fuel fanning these constituents' ire: they see Life in terms of white and black, good and bad refusing to investigate, let alone understand, the grey area between opposites. The race in which they are most interested is the one they want to win. And that is in ANY and EVERY thing!
Hoyer Blasts Republicans on Afghan War: 'Where Were They' for Seven Years? {Politics Daily}
Oct 20th 2009 8:26PM During the WMD hullabaloo preceding the invasion of Iraq, Afghanistan had already become an orphan due to national and political neglect. On the ground, our war on "terrorism" accomplished nothing more than taking Kabul and a few provinces from the Taliban. Al-Qaeda-the "real enemy" had retreated to the protective mountain bastions bordering an equally restive Pakistan. Then as now, our strategy was hit-or-miss when engaging the irrepressible pro-Taliban guerrillas still operating openly and with impunity throughout the vast geographical no-man's land that is Afghanistan. And worst, we were unprepared and ill-equipped on how to approach ancient ethnic and cultural antipathies. The question is: are we willing to invest more American troops without a clearly defined strategy that is both adaptive and flexible enough to assess and respond to constantly changing circumstances. Vis a vis McChrystal's "compassionate" military objective, we must question how to define its "success." Pacifying the population a la Iraq has proven to be a band-aide fix. I surmise that these countries' internal and external conflicts will continue to exacerbate during our presence and after our departure. The implosions are already visible in Iraq and continue unabated in tumultuous Afghanistan. If troop withdrawal is not an option, we must focus, rather than gamble, all our resources on mitigation and dispense with the hope of winning.
